One of the more interesting aspects of Caterpillar’s presence at bauma CONEXPO India 2026 is that the three machines launched at the show tell only part of the story.
The Cat 355 Hydraulic Excavator, Cat D5 Dozer and Cat 120 GC Motor Grader address three different areas of application — mining and heavy infrastructure on one side, and road construction on the other. Around them, however, Caterpillar is displaying a wider combination of Cat and SEM machines, connected technologies, aftermarket services, financing solutions, rental and used equipment, FG Wilson gensets and work tools.
Seen from the show floor, this makes the Caterpillar display less about individual machines and more about the different elements that surround equipment ownership and operation. That is particularly relevant in applications where machine utilisation, maintenance, service support and operating costs are closely connected.
Heavy Applications
The Cat 355 Hydraulic Excavator is aimed at demanding quarry, mining and heavy infrastructure applications, with the emphasis on productivity, stability and serviceability. Powered by a Cat C13B engine and electrohydraulic system, the 355 can be configured in the 355 WVG configuration with a 4040 mm-wide undercarriage for greater stability. Customers can also specify an optional 4.0 m³ severe-duty bucket or 4.5 m³ heavy-duty bucket.
Three work modes allow performance to be matched to the application, while Smart Mode automatically balances engine and hydraulic power to help save fuel. The machine also incorporates extended filter life, synchronised maintenance intervals, ground-level service points, automatic fan cleaning and onboard maintenance tracking, features intended to help reduce downtime and operating costs.
Operator interaction is another part of the package. The 355 has intuitive controls, push-button start, customisable operator ID settings and a multilingual touchscreen providing access to machine information and onboard support. A spacious cab, air-suspension seat and storage are designed around operator comfort, while smaller cab pillars, larger windows, a flat engine hood and a standard rearview camera improve visibility. Ground-level engine shutoff, serrated steps and an anti-skid service platform address access and service requirements.
Dozer Duty
The Cat D5 Dozer brings a different set of requirements to the same mining and heavy-infrastructure conversation. Powered by a Cat C7.1 engine and fully automatic transmission, the D5 combines a 170 hp electronic engine, torque divider, fully automatic transmission and differential steering. A larger 4.3 m³ SU blade allows the machine to move more material, while available technology features and VPAT blade options provide additional application flexibility.
The machine’s service features include extended filter life, grouped service points and access to routine maintenance areas intended to simplify maintenance and reduce downtime. Its elevated-sprocket undercarriage, modular component design, optional 30-minute cab removal and reversible fan are also designed to simplify service and repair.
There is a practical safety dimension to the design as well. A standard rear ladder provides access for fuelling, filter changes and rear-window cleaning, while grab rails on both sides of the cab roof and tie-off points support maintenance activities.
Multiple lighting options, a standard slope indicator, optional rearview camera and remote-control-ready operational capability provide additional features depending on application requirements.
Road Work
The Cat 120 GC Motor Grader addresses a different segment, with road construction and maintenance at its centre. Its proposition is based on grading performance, straightforward operation and low cost-per-hour ownership, particularly for low- to medium-duty applications such as rural road maintenance and finish grading.
Powered by the Cat C4.4 engine, the 120 GC combines a powershift transmission with a balanced machine design intended to deliver drawbar power to the ground.
Electronic throttle control adapts power and torque to application demand, while standard Eco Mode can improve fuel economy compared with operation without Eco Mode. A familiar steering-wheel and lever layout, torque-converter transmission and predictable hydraulic system are intended to simplify operation and support consistent grading.
Long-life structures, hardened circle teeth and replaceable wear inserts address durability. Available features include Circle Saver, reversing fan, digital blade slope meter, all-wheel drive, multiple moldboard widths and front and rear attachments for specific grading applications.
The Wider Proposition

The quote provides a useful summary of the way Caterpillar has presented the three launches at the show. The equipment is being displayed alongside connected technologies including Product Link, VisionLink and Cat GRADE with ASSIST, which are designed to provide machine information, jobsite visibility and support for operational decisions.
Aftermarket support is another visible part of the proposition. Customer Value Agreements are presented as a way of bringing maintenance, equipment protection and dealer support into the ownership equation.
The enhanced Cat CVA Services Commitment (SC2.0) includes Parts Next-Day and Two-Day Repairs for common repairs, with compensation if the commitment is not met, subject to terms and conditions.
Cat Central adds a digital platform providing access to equipment information, maintenance resources, online parts ordering and dealer support.
Financing also forms part of the display, with exclusive financing offers available on select machines through Cat Financial.
Machine Matters
From this column’s perspective, the interesting point is therefore not simply what Caterpillar has put on its stand, but how many different aspects of equipment use are represented around the machines themselves.
The excavator, dozer and motor grader remain the centre of the proposition. But alongside them sit technology, maintenance, parts, financing and dealer support.
For customers operating equipment in mining, infrastructure and road construction, those are practical considerations that extend well beyond the initial machine purchase.
Veritably, at bauma CONEXPO India 2026, Caterpillar has brought those elements together in one place.
And that, perhaps more than any individual specification, is what makes the display worth watching.
