Telangana Caste Survey: Reddy community owns 13.5 pc of land in state

Hyderabad: The Reddy community in Telangana, which constitutes 4.8 per cent of the total population, owns 13.5 per cent of the land in the state, followed by the Yadava community, with a strength of 5.7 per cent in population, holds 8.7 per cent of the total land, according to the caste survey conducted by the Congress government in Telangana.

The survey report, which was made public on April 15, further said that the state average of irrigated land owned per family is 0.7 acres on average. It can be observed that largely all the castes, except BC-B Perika, Velama and Reddy, own irrigated land less than the state average.

“At the top, Reddys own the highest share of total land relative to their population, indicating historical advantages in land accumulation, followed by Velamas and ST Koya. In contrast, communities like SC Bedas and the general category Muslims own much less land compared to their population share, reflecting their historical marginalisation from land assets,” the report said.

In the BC-B category, Kuruba Kuruma community records the highest land ownership, with over 62% of families owning land. This is followed by BC-D Arevallu, ST Koya, Lambadi, and SC Madiga communities, where about 60% of families own some land.

In the OC category, Rajus, Muslims, Jains, Brahmins and Iyengars report less than 10% of families owning land.

Among land-owning families in OC Rajus, Brahmins, Kapus, and ST Gonds and Koyas, around 30% hold between five and 20 acres.

Small and large holdings

In SC Beda and Madiga communities, nearly 90% of families own less than five acres.

Families owning more than 20 acres are highest among OC Jains at 8.2%, followed by Rajus at 7.5%, Brahmins at 6.8%, and BC Gangiredlavaru at 6%.
