Well Done, Republic TV

Republic TV deserves recognition for its reported sting operation on Zakir Naik, the controversial Islamic preacher who fled Bharat in 2016 and has since been living in Malaysia. The operation, reportedly conducted by a special correspondent from Assam, raises disturbing questions about Naik’s activities, his network of associates and the ideological agenda he continues to propagate from foreign soil. The significance of investigative journalism lies in exposing what powerful or controversial individuals would rather keep hidden. By reportedly approaching Naik’s associates under the guise of an aspiring filmmaker interested in embracing Islam, the correspondent appears to have found a way into the fugitive preacher’s inner circle. The revelations broadcast on Wednesday deserves serious public scrutiny, independent verification and, wherever criminal conduct is established, appropriate action by the competent authorities. The larger question, however, extends beyond one fugitive preacher. Why should someone facing criminal proceedings in Bharat be able to operate from abroad, address audiences and pursue his ideological mission while remaining beyond the immediate reach of Bharatiya law? Malaysia’s handling of Naik’s continued presence also merits diplomatic attention, particularly if the reported security arrangements and alleged links with Pakistani personnel are substantiated. The most consequential reported revelation is Naik’s apparent reluctance to return to Bharat while the Narendra Modi government remains in power. If accurately represented, that statement raises an obvious question: what does he fear about returning to face the Bharatiya legal system? It is not proof of guilt, but it is certainly a matter that warrants examination in the context of the cases pending against him. For a country confronting cross-border terrorism, radicalisation and hostile propaganda, such investigations can contribute to public understanding. Bharat’s security establishment has long had to contend with networks operating across national boundaries, often exploiting jurisdictions and political circumstances to evade accountability. Investigative journalism can help illuminate those networks, provided its claims are backed by verifiable evidence rather than speculation, though the latter appears less likely, considering the channel’s credibility. The political implications are equally significant, though they must be examined with care. Opposition parties have challenged successive government policies, from the farm laws and the Citizenship Amendment Act to questions surrounding examination-paper leaks and demands for the resignation of Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. These are distinct political controversies. However, Bharatiya agencies have reportedly obtained substantial evidence pointing to the role of foreign funding as well as deep-state actors, not only in the US but also elsewhere in the world, including Germany, Canada, Australia and the UK.

The alleged involvement of George Soros-linked organisations, including the organisation associated with Sonia Gandhi in Bharat, raises further questions that deserve serious examination. Hence, the evidence gathered by Bharatiya agencies must be examined in its entirety to establish whether a coordinated conspiracy involving Naik or others exists. Connecting the dots, in this context, is essential to understanding the larger picture. It is ridiculous and stupid to argue that every protest is part of a regime-change operation, despite agitators such as AISA activist Neha Bora and even a practising Supreme Court lawyer, Prashant Bhushan, openly declaring that their agitations in the streets of the national capital, as well as in a few other states, are intended only for ‘regime’ change. What more evidence does one need to demonstrate the real intentions of anti-national elements seeking to break up Bharat? Hence, the broader national-security debate cannot be dismissed merely because it is politically inconvenient. Bharat has legitimate reasons to remain vigilant against extremist ideologies, foreign interference and attempts to inflame communal divisions. Equally, national security must be pursued through constitutional institutions, credible investigations and the rule of law, principles that the Modi government has visibly demonstrated without any iota of doubt. That is what the Narendra Modi’s confident leadership, believes in: democracy, not a system driven by rumour and political suspicion. The Modi government’s emphasis on counterterrorism, indigenous defence production and strategic autonomy has placed national security firmly in the public discourse. The test is now whether the critical evidence gathered by journalists and intelligence agencies leads to lawful, demonstrable outcomes. Republic TV’s sting operation has proved a valuable contribution to that effort. Other news organisations should pursue the facts with equal tenacity, irrespective of the political implications. The media’s responsibility is not to manufacture a convenient narrative, but to expose uncomfortable truths and demand accountability from those in power, as well as those operating beyond its reach within the Opposition. Bharat aspires to become a developed nation by 2047. That ambition requires economic strength, technological progress, social cohesion and an unwavering commitment to the Constitution. It also demands vigilance against violent extremism. The message is clear: no fugitive should be beyond the reach of justice, and no extremist network should escape scrutiny. Well done, Republic TV, for bringing these questions into the public domain as it has a clear message to even Bharat voters. Now let the evidence speak—and let the law take its course.
