For a brief but fateful moment, the unconquerable spirit of Arjuna appeared to waver beneath the relentless onslaught of Ashwatthama, the illustrious son of Drona. The son of the preceptor displayed extraordinary mastery of arms, covering the battlefield with an unbroken torrent of arrows that darkened the sky. The warriors of the Kauravas rejoiced at this rare spectacle, believing that fortune had at last smiled upon them. Their ranks echoed with triumphant cries, while the armies of the Pandavas were thrown into confusion and dismay. Witnessing this alarming turn of events, the celestial Siddhas and Charanas watched with anxious hearts, fearing that the very guardians of righteousness were being overwhelmed.

Beholding Arjuna momentarily restrained by the brilliance of his adversary, Krishna, whose divine wisdom never tolerated hesitation in the cause of dharma, spoke with righteous indignation. His words struck like thunder upon the heart of his beloved friend. “Is it not astonishing,” he exclaimed, “that the son of Drona should gain the upper hand over you? Has the mighty Gandiva become unsteady in your grasp? Where has vanished the strength that once humbled the greatest heroes? Search your own heart. Has compassion for the son of your revered preceptor weakened your resolve? Have you abandoned the unwavering concentration that has always guided your arrows? Has steadfastness deserted the conqueror of worlds?”

The fiery rebuke awakened the sleeping lion within Arjuna. His eyes blazed with renewed determination, and his spirit surged with irresistible energy. Turning to Krishna, he declared with fearless confidence, “Behold, Madhava! Ashwatthama rejoices because he has enveloped us with his ceaseless arrows. Let him witness the true power of Gandiva.” No sooner had he spoken than his celestial bow resounded like the roar of storm clouds. His shafts flew with unimaginable swiftness, shattering Ashwatthama’s bow, royal umbrella, banner, and lofty standard. Maces, pestles, spears, and every formidable weapon hurled against him were split into countless fragments while still suspended in the air. With astonishing precision, Arjuna humbled the pride of his adversary, whose fading brilliance resembled the sun veiled behind heavy masses of snow.

Realizing that Ashwatthama alone could not restrain the Pandava hero, the combined divisions of the Kaurava army rushed forward from every direction. Each warrior imagined that Arjuna had singled him out, for his arrows descended everywhere at once with terrifying speed. His shafts crashed upon Ashwatthama like the irresistible thunderbolt striking a mighty mountain. Yet the son of Drona endured that dreadful assault with remarkable endurance, displaying the indomitable courage inherited from his illustrious father. The duel between these two incomparable archers filled the battlefield with awe and wonder.

As the fierce contest continued, Arjuna’s irresistible prowess devastated the united armies supporting Ashwatthama. His divine weapons swept across the field with merciless precision. Mighty warriors fell with severed arms, shattered legs, and headless bodies collapsing upon the earth. Broken chariots lay scattered among dying elephants and riderless horses. Royal umbrellas, fluttering banners, and shattered standards floated upon streams of crimson blood that coursed across the battlefield like sorrowful rivers. The proud forces of Anga, Vanga, Nishada, and Kalinga encircled Arjuna in overwhelming numbers, while Ashwatthama, seizing the opportunity, renewed his assault with renewed pride and thunderous roars.

Unafraid of the gathering hosts, Arjuna confronted Ashwatthama with undiminished valor. Their tremendous encounter drew the admiration of gods, sages, Gandharvas, and celestial beings, who watched the unparalleled exhibition of martial excellence. Ashwatthama fought with fierce and uncontrollable energy, refusing to yield even before the devastating might of Gandiva. Seeing his opponent’s growing ferocity, Krishna addressed Arjuna with solemn urgency. “If this warrior is not subdued now, his growing pride and unconstrained power will become even more dangerous. Destroy the arrogance that sustains him and break the confidence of the enemy.”

Narrating the events to Dhritarashtra, Sanjaya described how Arjuna instantly obeyed Krishna’s counsel. His razor-edged arrows pierced the vital parts of Ashwatthama, depriving him of strength and composure. With flawless skill, Arjuna severed the reins of his enemy’s horses, causing the frightened steeds to carry Ashwatthama’s chariot far from the battlefield. Broken in spirit and stripped of his confidence, the son of Drona withdrew and sought refuge near Karna.

As Krishna prepared to guide the chariot toward the remaining hostile formations, a great tumult arose from another quarter of the battlefield. Surveying the disturbance, he said to Arjuna, “Behold! The mighty king of Magadha, Dandadhara, has hurled his formidable elephant corps upon our army. His assault is throwing the fourfold divisions into confusion. Delay no longer. Go forth and end his destruction.”

Obeying without hesitation, Krishna drove the celestial chariot toward the advancing monarch. Mounted upon a colossal elephant, Dandadhara resembled a moving mountain, scattering the Pandava ranks with irresistible force. Panic spread through the army as soldiers fled in every direction before the enraged elephants’ crushing advance. Undeterred, Arjuna advanced to confront the gigantic beast. Dandadhara rained countless arrows upon both Krishna and Arjuna, hoping to halt their advance. But the son of Pandu, aflame with righteous wrath, answered with irresistible precision. His blazing shafts severed the king’s arms and struck off his head before slaying the mighty elephant that bore him into battle.

Witnessing the fall of their sovereign, the forces of Dandadhara charged furiously upon Arjuna in desperate retaliation. Yet the wielder of Gandiva unleashed a succession of celestial astras that shattered their ranks with overwhelming force. Broken in courage and scattered in every direction, the vast army fled the battlefield like storm clouds torn apart by the irresistible winds, leaving behind another glorious testimony to the unconquerable valor of Arjuna, whose divine skill preserved the cause of righteousness amidst the darkest hour of war.
