Nanded: Akali Dal chief and former Punjab deputy chief minister Sukhbir Singh Badal was attacked in Maharashtra’s Nanded on Thursday, police said.
Badal was attacked near a gurudwara and has been hospitalised, police said.
A viral video showed Badal walking inside a building with a cloth wrapped around his right hand.
Earlier in the day, Badal had visited the Takht Sri Hazur Sahib in Nanded along with wife Harsimrat Kaur Badal, who is an Akali Dal MP.
According to sources, a surgery is underway on Sukhbir Badal’s right hand.
The attacker has been identified as Nihang Jaspal Singh. He was arrested immediately.
“The Government of India should order a CBI inquiry into this… Narain Chaura is an individual trained by the ISI, and the Punjab Police possess concrete evidence regarding him… The Chief Minister didn’t even condemn that incident (2024 attack on Badal outside the Golden Temple). SP Harpal Randhawa is still stationed in Amritsar today… Because the previous incident wasn’t investigated properly, another incident has occurred today… The Fadnavis government and the Government of India should order a CBI inquiry into this,” says Bikram Singh Majithia.
“The person tried to attack his chest, on his attack. The attempt was to kill,” says Shiromani Akali Dal leader Bikram Majithia on the attack on Sukhbir Singh Badal.
Addressing a press conference, he said, “He (Badal) did not even move an inch when he was attacked. The person attacked his forearm. He received 8-10 stitches; he is under anaesthesia. He is in surgery.”
Prime Minister Narendra Modi inquired about Sukhbir Singh Badal’s health in a phone conversation with his wife Harsimrat Kaur Badal, according to sources.
