Toranahalli Hanuman Temple is located atop a scenic hillock in Toranahalli village near Chikodi in Belagavi district of Karnataka. Nestled in a peaceful rural landscape, the temple is one of the most revered Hanuman shrines in the Karnataka–Maharashtra border region. Devotees from both states visit the temple throughout the year to seek the blessings of Lord Hanuman.
The exact age of the temple is not known as no inscriptions or historical records have been discovered to establish its origin. However, local traditions suggest that the sacred Hanuman idol has been worshipped for several centuries. While the idol is believed to be ancient, the present temple structure has undergone renovations and expansions over time to accommodate the growing number of devotees.
The presiding deity of the temple is Lord Hanuman, worshipped as Sri Hanumappa and Anjaneya Swamy. The deity is revered as a Swayambhu (self-manifested) form of Hanuman, making the shrine especially sacred among devotees. Lord Hanuman is worshipped here as the embodiment of strength, devotion, courage, wisdom, and unwavering loyalty to Lord Rama.

According to temple tradition, the area surrounding present-day Toranahalli was once covered with dense forests and had very few inhabitants. Travellers, shepherds, and villagers frequently passed through the region, but there was no established place of worship.
Over time, unusual and divine occurrences began to be noticed at a particular location within the forest. Villagers observed that cattle grazing in the area would repeatedly stop at the same spot and refuse to move further. Some people reported witnessing a mysterious divine radiance, while others experienced vivid dreams in which Lord Hanuman instructed them to worship him at that sacred location.
Moved by these repeated signs, the villagers searched the area and discovered a sacred stone image of Lord Hanuman emerging from the ground. Since the idol was not believed to have been installed by any human being, it was revered as a Swayambhu manifestation of Hanuman.
Recognizing the discovery as a divine blessing, the villagers constructed a small shrine around the sacred image and began offering regular worship. As devotion increased, many devotees experienced what they believed to be Lord Hanuman’s grace and protection. Stories of fulfilled prayers, relief from difficulties, and divine intervention gradually spread throughout the surrounding villages.
The fame of the shrine soon attracted devotees from neighboring regions of Karnataka and Maharashtra. What started as a humble forest shrine slowly evolved into the present-day Toranahalli Hanuman Temple, which is now regarded as one of the most important Hanuman temples in the region.
Temple tradition further holds that Lord Hanuman continues to reside here as a guardian deity, protecting devotees who approach him with faith, sincerity, and devotion. Though preserved through oral tradition rather than inscriptions, this sacred narrative remains an integral part of the temple’s spiritual heritage.

Amavasya is another important occasion when special prayers are conducted and devotees visit the temple in significant numbers.
