Sri Varadamba Temple forms part of the ancient Varadamoola Kshetra, a revered pilgrimage centre with a history dating back several centuries. The present shrine is associated with the Keladi Nayaka rulers, while several nearby temples and sculptures belong to the Western Chalukya period (11th–12th century CE), indicating the antiquity of this sacred site.

The presiding deity is Sri Varadamba Devi, revered as the divine manifestation of Gayatri, Savitri, and Saraswati. The temple is regarded as one of Karnataka’s most sacred Shakti shrines as the holy Varada River is traditionally believed to originate beneath the divine Padukas of the Goddess.

The temple follows the traditional Karnataka style of architecture and is part of a sacred temple complex comprising shrines dedicated to Lord Ganesha, Lord Suryanarayana, Lord Gopalakrishna, the Sapta Matrikas, and Lord Sadashiva. Varadamoola has been revered since ancient times as the birthplace of the sacred Varada River, an important tributary of the Tungabhadra River. The site gradually evolved into a major pilgrimage centre where devotees worship Goddess Varadamba before offering prayers at the river’s sacred origin. The Keladi Nayaka rulers patronised the temple, while the surviving stone temples and sculptures reflect the artistic excellence of the Western Chalukya period.

According to the sacred tradition of Varadamoola, Lord Shiva once assumed his fierce Raudra form, causing intense heat to spread throughout the universe. To pacify him, Lord Vishnu performed Abhisheka using the sacred waters of the celestial River Bhagirathi carried in his divine Shankha (conch). The holy waters that flowed from this divine act manifested as the sacred Varada River.

The river is believed to originate beneath the sacred Padukas of Goddess Varadamba, who is worshipped as the combined manifestation of Gayatri, Savitri, and Saraswati. The waters first emerge into Lakshmi Tirtha before flowing into Sarva Tirtha, which is traditionally believed to be the source of twenty-four sacred Tirthas. From there, the river begins its earthly journey as the Varada River before merging with the Tungabhadra River at Galaganatha. Because of this divine origin, Varadamoola is revered as a sacred Tirtha Kshetra where devotees seek the blessings of Goddess Varadamba for wisdom, prosperity, and spiritual well-being.

Navaratri is the principal festival celebrated with special alankarams, homas, and daily pujas, culminating on Vijayadashami. Ugadi and Deepavali are also observed with special rituals, and devotees visit the sacred Varadamoola Tirtha throughout the year to seek the blessings of Goddess Varadamba.
