‘Lekhak Gaon’ in Uttarakhand Nurtures Writing Talent

Thano village, located in the picturesque Himalayan region near Dehradun, has achieved the distinction of being the first ‘Lekhak Gaon’ of its kind in the country. The concept of this village to its development, it has been done by former Chief Minister of Uttarakhand Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank, who himself is also known as a distinguished litterateur. He claims that in this village, writers will get a calm and creative environment necessary for the creation of their works.

The recently organized “Sparsh Himalaya Mahotsav-2024” by Sparsh Himalaya Foundation in Thano, the country’s first writer’s village, became a symbol of the rich heritage of Indian literature, culture, and art. In this historic event, Uttarakhand’s first “Lekhak Gaon” was inaugurated, where writers and thinkers can get the freedom of creative thinking in the proximity of nature.

With Himalayan specialty, the aim of ‘Lekhak Gaon’ is to provide a place to those extraordinary, learned litterateurs, lyricists, and artists of the country and the world, whose pens created timeless works of their time and gained popularity among the common people. This unique event of “Lekhak Gaon” will not only inspire the litterateurs but is also an important step towards preserving the cultural heritage of this region. Here, structures like Lekhak Kutir, Sanjeevani Vatika, Nakshatra and Navgrah Vatika, library, and Ganga and Himalaya Museum have made it a complete literary pilgrimage.

From 25 to 27 October 2024, under the aegis of Sparsh Himalaya Foundation, an International Art, Literature, and Culture Festival was organized at Lekhak Gaon located in Thano, Dehradun. In this five-day festival, writers, authors, and artists from more than 65 countries participated, who were successful in presenting the Hindi language and the cultural heritage of Uttarakhand at the international level. This festival proved to be an important step in the promotion of the Hindi language, and the foreign writers participating in it will act as brand ambassadors of Hindi in their countries.

Books related to literature, culture, history, social, political, geography, philosophy, religion, knowledge-science, etc., of all Himalayan states have been given space in the library of Lekhak Village, and more will be given space.

Ancient historical statues, paintings, coins, manuscripts, and other rare items will be collected. Pahari paintings and pictures of world-class photographers will enhance the beauty of the library. While creating the additional environment of the library, special care will be taken to maintain an atmosphere of purity and peace. The construction of the library will be built as an example of Himalayan folk culture and architecture.
