Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell has announced his retirement from all international cricket, bringing an end to a 14-year-long all-format career, where he was one of the biggest crowd-pullers in the world.

Maxwell’s departure had been preceded by a series of setbacks. Already unable to get into the Test side for various reasons, he walked away from ODI cricket in June 2025, with the Champions Trophy semi-final against India marking his last appearance in the format.

His prospects of extending his T20I career also became uncertain in 2026 when Cricket Australia excluded him from its 2026-27 central contracts in April, before leaving him out of the squad for the Bangladesh tour in May-June.

Maxwell played 286 international matches for Australia, scoring 7,226 runs and taking 136 wickets. His tally included 3,990 runs in 149 ODIs, 2,897 in 130 T20Is and 339 in seven Tests. He was also part of three World Cup-winning campaigns, lifting the ODI World Cup twice (2015 and 2023) and the T20 World Cup in 2021.

Few innings in his career matched his remarkable effort against Afghanistan at the 2023 ODI World Cup. Australia looked virtually out of the contest at 91/7 while chasing 292 in Mumbai when Maxwell launched an extraordinary counterattack.

Despite suffering debilitating cramps that severely restricted his movement, he hammered an unbeaten 201 from 128 balls. His 21 fours and 10 sixes helped Australia complete the chase, with Pat Cummins providing support in an unbeaten 202-run stand. Maxwell became the first Australian men’s player to score an ODI double century, producing an innings that remains one of the format’s greatest individual efforts.

Maxwell’s last outing for Australia was against Oman in the T20 World Cup Super Eights on February 20, 2026. Maxwell is likely to remain active in franchise cricket and is contracted to Melbourne Stars for the 2026-27 Big Bash League season.
