Chennai: The main opposition DMK on Saturday staged protest across the state condemning Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay for his alleged “scurrilous remarks” targeting late party patriarch M Karunanidhi and party president M K Stalin.
Senior leader PK Sekar Babu, leading the protest here, praised Stalin for his “sacrifices, personality, and for being humane,” and also lauded him as “Mr Clean,” who followed ethics and values.
Such an unblemished leader was targeted in the Assembly by the TVK-led government, and the DMK objected to Law Minister R Nirmal Kumar’s claims vis-à-vis Stalin’s incarceration during the infamous Emergency (1975-77), he said.
The DMK is protesting comments made by CM Vijay during the Assembly session on September 7, 2026.
The opposition party stated that the Chief Minister trivialized and ridiculed late party patriarch and five-time Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi, late union minister Murasoli Maran, and party president M.K. Stalin. The protests condemn remarks mocking M.K. Stalin’s imprisonment and the torture he endured under the Maintenance of Internal Security Act (MISA) during the 1975–1977 Emergency when he was 23.
The DMK criticized the ruling camp for leveling corruption charges against previous DMK regimes instead of addressing governance and administrative issues.
Demonstrations are being staged at party headquarters across all revenue districts in Tamil Nadu.
