Dattabardi Datta Temple is an ancient and revered temple dedicated to Lord Dattatreya, situated on Dattabardi Hill near Hadgaon in the Nanded district of Maharashtra. Surrounded by peaceful natural surroundings, the temple is an important pilgrimage centre for devotees of Lord Datta. It is particularly known for its unique Ekamukhi (single-faced) idol of Lord Dattatreya and the traditional belief that the Lord chose this sacred hill as his permanent abode.

The temple is traditionally believed to be around 700–800 years old. However, its exact date of construction is not established through historical records. The temple has remained a place of worship for generations.

The presiding deity is Lord Dattatreya, worshipped as the combined manifestation of Lord Brahma, Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva.

The most distinctive feature of this temple is its Ekmukhi Dattatreya idol, depicting the Lord with a single face and two arms, unlike the commonly seen three-faced form.

The temple also houses a Shiva Lingam and the sacred Padukas of Lord Dattatreya. Separate shrines are dedicated to Mata Anasuya, Sage Atri, Goddess Renuka and Goddess Annapurna.

The temple is traditionally associated with the Hemadpanthi style of architecture, known for its stone construction and simple yet impressive design.

The temple complex has carved pillars, a spacious courtyard, decorative entrances and a seven-storeyed entrance tower. Its elevated location adds to the spiritual atmosphere and offers beautiful views of the surrounding countryside.

Dattabardi has been associated with the worship of Lord Dattatreya for several centuries. According to local tradition, the hill was once a place where sages performed meditation and penance.

Over the generations, the temple developed into an important religious centre, attracting devotees from Nanded and neighbouring districts of Maharashtra and Telangana.

The temple’s religious importance is closely connected with the traditional story of a devoted sage who performed severe penance to obtain the blessings of Lord Dattatreya.

According to a traditional legend associated with Dattabardi Hill, many centuries ago, a sage who was an ardent devotee of Lord Dattatreya lived in an ashram on this sacred hill. Although his name is not mentioned in the available accounts, his extraordinary devotion forms the basis of the temple’s Sthalapurana.

The sage had only one desire — to receive the divine darshan of Lord Dattatreya. With this wish in his heart, he began performing severe penance on the hill, dedicating himself entirely to prayer and meditation.

As the years passed, the sage remained firm in his devotion. According to the local tradition, he continued his intense penance for twelve long years, seeking nothing except the blessings and divine presence of Lord Dattatreya.

Pleased with his unwavering faith and devotion, Lord Dattatreya finally appeared before the sage and offered to grant him a boon.

Instead of asking for wealth, power or personal happiness, the sage made a selfless request. He prayed that Lord Dattatreya should remain permanently on the hill so that future generations of devotees could visit the sacred place and receive his blessings.

Moved by the sage’s devotion, Lord Dattatreya granted his wish.

According to the legend, Lord Dattatreya agreed to reside on Dattabardi Hill along with his divine parents, Sage Atri and Mata Anasuya.

From that time onwards, the hill came to be revered as Dattabardi, the sacred abode of Lord Datta.

Devotees believe that Lord Dattatreya continues to bless those who visit the temple with sincere faith, granting them peace of mind, spiritual strength and protection from difficulties.

Datta Jayanti is the most important festival celebrated at the temple. The celebrations traditionally include a seven-day Harinam Saptah, with devotional singing, bhajans, kirtans, religious discourses and Mahaprasad. A grand palanquin procession of Lord Dattatreya is also organised.

Guru Purnima, Navaratri, Dasara, Diwali and Kartik Purnima are other important occasions observed at the temple.

Thursdays are considered especially auspicious for worshipping Lord Dattatreya, and devotees visit the temple to offer prayers and seek his blessings.
