Vasuki Dada Temple is located in the town of Thangadh, in Surendranagar district- Gujarat. The temple lies in the Saurashtra region and is associated with a sacred pond traditionally known as Padma Sarovar. This area has been considered spiritually powerful since ancient times
The temple is believed to be very ancient, around 1000–1200 years old as per local traditions. It has been a continuous place of worship for generations, and many families in the region consider Vasuki Dada as their ancestral deity.
The main deity of the temple is Vasuki, worshipped as Vasuki Dada, the Nagar Devta (guardian deity) of Thangadh. He is believed to protect the town and its people from dangers, especially those related to serpent afflictions and unseen forces. Devotees worship him with deep faith and offer milk, turmeric, and prayers.
The temple has a simple and traditional structure, reflecting local style rather than grand design. The sanctum houses the sacred representation of Vasuki, which is worshipped with offerings like milk and flowers. The temple surroundings are calm and peaceful, adding to the spiritual experience of devotees.
The region around Thangadh was once known as Dharmaranya, a sacred forest where sages performed penance. It is also believed to have been a Nag Bhoomi (land of serpent worship) from ancient times. Over the years, the worship of Vasuki Dada became deeply rooted in the local culture, and he came to be regarded as the Nagar Devta of the town. The temple has been preserved and worshipped by local communities for centuries.
In ancient times, this region was a dense and sacred forest where great sages like Kanva, Angiras, Atri, Mandavya, and Brihaspati stayed during their pilgrimage to Somnath Temple. During the rainy season, they performed deep penance and spiritual practices here and decided to conduct a grand yajna near a sacred pond.
However, a powerful demon named Bhimasura started disturbing the yajna by throwing impure substances into the sacred fire and creating fear among the sages. Unable to continue their rituals, the sages prayed for divine help.
At that moment, a divine message was heard that powerful serpent deities would protect them. Soon, Vasuki, along with other Nagas like Takshaka and Shesha, appeared and fought against the demon forces. Using their divine power, they destroyed the demons and restored peace in the region.
After this victory, the sages prayed to the serpent king to remain there and protect the land. It is believed that Shesha, who carries the Earth, asked Vasuki to stay in this region as its guardian. From that time, Vasuki became the Nagar Devta of Thangadh.
Another belief connects Vasuki to the great Samudra Manthan, where he served as the divine rope between devas and asuras, showing his cosmic importance. Local traditions also say that Vasuki appeared in the dreams of kings and guided them to establish and maintain this temple.
Thus, the temple stands as a symbol of divine protection, victory of good over evil, and the powerful presence of serpent energy.
The temple becomes very vibrant during Nag Panchami, which is the most important festival here, attracting large numbers of devotees. The month of Shravan is also considered highly auspicious, and special poojas are performed. Local fairs and community celebrations are held with great devotion, where people offer prayers to Vasuki Dada and seek his blessings.
