UP: Inquiry initiated against 2 cops for beating Dalit youth in outpost

Budaun (UP): Two policemen have been attached to police lines and a departmental inquiry has been instituted against them for allegedly assaulting a Dalit youth inside the Bagrain outpost of Wazirganj police station here, officials said on Tuesday.

The matter came to light after a week-old purported video of the incident went viral on the internet, in which the outpost in-charge could be seen beating the man with a belt when he arrived at the outpost to file a complaint.

Budaun Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) OP Singh said taking cognisance of the video, a departmental inquiry has been instituted against SI Vishnoi and head constable Sanjeev Kumar by sending them to police lines. Kumar had uploaded the video, he added.

Kumar had uploaded the video, he added.

According to locals, Pintu Jatav, a resident of Sisaiya village of Bagrain police post area had moved to the police to file a complaint about an ongoing dispute with his brother, but SI Sushil Kumar Vishnoi, who was resting at that time, pulled out a strap and without asking anything, started beating him up.

In the video, the youth can be seen taking off his pants and telling Vishnoi to kill him by beating him up.

amajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav has shared the video of the incident on his Twitter account and said the sub-inspector (SI) assaulted the youth for disturbing him while he was resting.

“The non-acting daroga ji of UP’s acting DGP has given a violent reaction to the complaining public with his belt when he was disturbed during his rest. Good that the sub inspector has a belt in his hand and not a bulldozer or a Thar, or else…” he said in a Tweet in Hindi.
