Sri Thirumalanjaneya Swamy Temple, popularly known as Talyada Hanuma Temple, is a revered shrine dedicated to Lord Hanuman in Talya village, Karnataka. The presiding deity is worshipped as Satyadevaru (God of Truth). The temple is famous for its magnificent Hanuman idol, beautiful stone carvings and unique traditions that have been followed for generations.

The temple is locally believed to be around 800 years old, although its exact age has not been confirmed through historical inscriptions. Talya is an ancient settlement with a rich historical background, associated with the rule of the Nayaka chieftains of Chitradurga.

The presiding deity, Sri Anjaneya Swamy, is a magnificent 8–10 feet tall stone idol facing east. The Lord’s right hand is raised in Abhaya Mudra, offering protection to devotees, while his left hand rests on his waist. His long tail curves around his head and points eastward. During special occasions, the deity is adorned with a silver covering, while a smaller idol is decorated with gold ornaments.

The temple has a small gopura above the sanctum and a beautiful Navaranga supported by decorative pillars. The stone carvings surrounding the main idol depict important episodes from the Ramayana. One shows Hanuman presenting Lord Rama’s ring to Goddess Sita in Ashoka Vatika, while another portrays young Hanuman leaping towards the rising Sun, mistaking it for a ripe red fruit.

Talya is an ancient village associated with the Nayaka rulers of Chitradurga, including Matti Thimmanna Nayaka and Madakari Nayaka. Over generations, the temple became an important centre of Hanuman worship. Devotees affectionately call the deity Talyada Hanuma and believe that he protects those who follow truth and righteousness, earning him the name Satyadevaru.

According to a fascinating local legend, Talya village once suffered from a terrible drought. The rains had failed, the village tanks and ponds dried up, and the agricultural fields became barren. People struggled to find drinking water, while cattle suffered without water and fodder.

Unable to bear these hardships, the villagers gathered together and offered sincere prayers to God, seeking relief from the drought.

That very night, an elderly man appeared in the dream of the village Patel, or village headman, and uttered the mysterious words “Talyaanu Baalyaanu” (ತಾಳ್ಯನು ಬಾಳ್ಯಾನು).

The following morning, dark clouds suddenly gathered over the village, and heavy rains began to pour. The tanks and ponds filled with water, the fields became fertile again, and the villagers were relieved of their suffering.

The villagers regarded this unexpected rainfall as a divine blessing. According to local belief, the village received its name Talya from the first two syllables of the mysterious words spoken by the elderly man in the Patel’s dream. This legend has been passed down through generations and remains an important part of the village’s folklore.

Another interesting tradition concerns two iron arrows preserved near the temple entrance, which devotees believe once belonged to Lord Rama. The temple also possesses a wooden horse called Teji, believed to contain sacred Saligrama stones within its body.

During the annual celebrations, a unique ritual called Banappa and Teji Anjaneya Swamy Bete, or ceremonial hunting procession, takes place. As part of this tradition, Thimmappa is seated on a stone platform near a stream close to Malasinganahalli, approximately 1.25 kilometres from Talya. Banappa and Teji Anjaneya Swamy are then taken in a ceremonial hunting procession accompanied by traditional music and enthusiastic devotees. A special Bhuta Puja is also performed, reflecting the region’s ancient folk traditions.

The annual Jatre is the temple’s major celebration, attracting devotees from Talya and neighbouring villages. Special Abhisheka, Alankara and prayers are performed. The traditional Banappa and Teji Anjaneya Swamy Bete procession, along with Bhuta Puja, is a distinctive highlight of the festivities.
