New Delhi: BJP Rajya Sabha MP Tarun Chugh on Tuesday wrote to Union Home Minister Amit Shah demanding a CBI and NIA investigation into several cases concerning the law and order situation in Punjab, alleging that the state’s ruling party is extending “political acceptance and patronage” to persons with criminal backgrounds.
Chugh also sought an investigation and identification of a “notorious gangster” allegedly seen at a political demonstration held outside his residence in Amritsar on September 1.
He said he has written to Punjab Director General of Police Gaurav Yadav in this regard, seeking verification of the person’s identity, preservation of visual evidence, and a fair and time-bound investigation.
He said a large number of people in villages are being put to immense harassment and inconvenience due to illegal and rogue activities of the sand mafia gangs all over the state.
The investigation into the entire matter must be handed over to the CBI because there were inter-state ramifications of the sand mafia operations, Chugh added.
