Beijing: Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi will attend a meeting of the National Security Advisors of BRICS countries to be held in New Delhi on June 22-23, Beijing announced on Thursday.
The BRICS National Security Advisors Meeting is a high-level platform that brings together the National Security Advisors (NSAs) of the 11 BRICS member-states to exchange views on key security challenges.
Wang will attend the meeting upon invitation, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian told a media briefing in Beijing on Thursday.
This will be Wang’s first visit to India in almost a year. He had travelled to the national capital last August and held meetings with Indian NSA Ajit Doval, as well as External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar.
The Chinese foreign minister did not travel to New Delhi last month for the BRICS foreign ministers’ meeting, as US President Donald J. Trump was visiting Beijing between 13 and 15 May.
Wang’s visit to India comes as the two countries continue to implement confidence-building measures to stabilise ties. The relationship between India and China cratered following the clashes at Galwan in the summer of 2020, and the two sides held barely any high-level political dialogues.
It was in the summer of 2024 that Jaishankar and Wang met a couple of times followed by the disengagement agreement being concluded and announced on 21 October 2024, It was after this that New Delhi and Beijing began the process of stabilising ties.
Modi met Chinese President Xi Jinping on the margins of the BRICS summit in the Russian city of Kazan in October 2024. The two leaders directed both governments to activate various bilateral mechanisms. Doval travelled to Beijing at the end of December 2024 and held a round of discussions with Wang (both are Special Representatives of their respective governments) on the boundary question.
Wang’s return visit to India in August 2025 saw the next round of the Special Representative mechanism being held between the two countries. India and China have since implemented measures such as the resumption of the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra, as well as direct passenger flights to promote people-to-people connections.
Modi met Xi in Tianjin last year on the margins of the Heads of States summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO). This was the second meeting between the two since 2024.
The two leaders may also attend the SCO Heads of States summit being hosted by Kyrgyzstan later this year. Wang will likely hold bilateral meetings with both Doval and Jaishankar during his visit to New Delhi next week.
India is the current chair of BRICS—the 11-member grouping that includes Brazil, Russia, China, South Africa, Egypt, Ethiopia, the United Arab Emirates, Iran, Indonesia, and Saudi Arabia.
