Arulmigu Thirumalai Murugan Temple is situated atop a small rocky hill at Thovalai in Kanyakumari District, Tamil Nadu. Thovalai is renowned across South India for its fragrant jasmine flowers and one of Tamil Nadu’s largest flower markets. Surrounded by lush paddy fields, colourful flower gardens, and the majestic Western Ghats, the temple offers a serene and spiritually uplifting atmosphere.
The exact date of the temple’s origin is not known, as no inscriptions have been discovered to establish its antiquity. Based on local tradition, the temple is believed to be over 500 years old. It has been worshipped continuously for several centuries and remains one of the most revered Murugan shrines in Kanyakumari District. Though renovated periodically, the temple has retained its ancient spiritual significance.
The presiding deity is Sri Subramanya Swamy (Lord Murugan), enshrined in a beautiful standing posture holding the sacred Vel, which symbolizes divine wisdom, courage, and the victory of righteousness over evil. The deity is revered as a compassionate protector who blesses devotees with success in education, marriage, career, good health, prosperity, and relief from obstacles.
Separate shrines for Lord Vinayagar and other guardian deities are also present within the temple complex. The temple walls are adorned with paintings depicting the Arupadai Veedu, the six sacred abodes of Lord Murugan, enhancing the spiritual ambience of the shrine.
The temple is constructed in the traditional Dravidian style on a natural hillock. Devotees climb a series of stone steps to reach the sanctum, symbolizing the spiritual journey towards attaining divine grace.
The temple consists of the Garbhagriha (Sanctum Sanctorum), Ardha Mandapam, and a simple entrance. Unlike many grand temple complexes, the beauty of this shrine lies in its peaceful surroundings and scenic hilltop location. From the temple premises, devotees can enjoy breathtaking views of Thovalai’s famous flower fields, fertile farmlands, and the distant Western Ghats, making the visit both spiritually and visually enriching.
For generations, the people of Thovalai have worshipped Lord Murugan as the guardian deity of their village. The region has been famous for flower cultivation since ancient times, and the local farming community has always regarded Lord Murugan as the divine protector of their lands and livelihood.

Another long-standing tradition connects the temple with Thovalai’s world-famous flower cultivation. The flower growers of the region have, for generations, offered the first harvest of jasmine and other fragrant flowers to Lord Murugan before selling them in the market. This act of gratitude is believed to bring prosperity, abundant harvests, and the continued blessings of the deity.
The temple celebrates all the major festivals associated with Lord Murugan with great devotion. The most important among them is Aadi Last Tuesday – Malar Muzhukku Vizha, when Lord Murugan is beautifully adorned with thousands of fresh flowers from the famous Thovalai flower market.
Other important festivals include Thai Poosam, Vaikasi Visakam, Skanda Sashti, Panguni Uthiram, Karthigai Deepam, and the Monthly Krithigai celebrations. Special abhishekams, alankarams, and deeparadhana are performed on these occasions, attracting devotees from across the region.
