Eugene (USA): National senior record holder high jumper Pooja Singh failed to live up to the expectations, finishing seventh in the final, as India ended their World Athletics U20 Championships campaign with three medals here.
The 19-year-old Pooja could only clear 1.84m, way below her national senior record height of 1.93m. She failed to sail over 1.87m in three attempts.
Coming into the final, Pooja had been in strong contention for a medal, boasting the third-best personal mark among the 14 finalists.
However, she managed a final score of 1.84m, well shy of the mark for a medal — 1.90m — as well as her personal best of 1.93m.
On the evening, she managed to clear 1.75m and 1.80m on the first attempt, and cleared 1.84m on the second attempt. However, she was unable to clear the 1.87m mark after three attempts.
Izobelle Louison-Roe of Australia won the gold with 1.92m, while Lilianna Batori (1.90m) of Hungary and Aitana Alonso (1.90m) of Spain bagged the silver and bronze respectively.
India concluded their campaign at the World Athletics U20 Championships in Eugene, Oregon, with three medals. On the final day, national record holder Pooja Singh finished seventh in the women’s high jump (1.84m), while the women’s 4-400 relay team placed ninth (3:45.28), wrapping up a tough closing session for the contingent.
