Kolkata: Kolkata’s riverfronts and the iconic Howrah Bridge were lit up in elaborate illumination, laser displays and a spectacular drone show on Saturday, as the city dressed up for the 12th International Day of Yoga, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi set to lead the main event from Red Road on June 21.
The riverfront carnival also marked the celebration of the Paschimbanga Divas, West Bengal Day.
Princep Ghat, with its superb colonial-era architecture, and the modern Millennium Park along the Hooghly river saw extensive decoration for the celebrations, officials said.
Elaborate preparations are underway at Red Road, where around 35,000 people are expected to perform yoga asanas alongside the prime minister on Sunday morning.
Bengal’s traditional dance by groups, and dhakis (drummers) performed as part of the celebration.
The national event at Red Road will commence at 5 am on Sunday, with security and traffic arrangements in place around the venue ahead of the Prime Minister’s visit.
