Paris: Aman Sehrawat, India’s sole male wrestler at the 2024 Paris Olympics, made an impressive run to the 57kg semifinals with commanding victories in his first two matches on Thursday.
Sehrawat is set to face the top-seeded Japanese wrestler, Rei Higuchi, in the semifinals later today. A win would secure India another Olympic medal.
In his opening bout, Sehrawat overpowered Vladimir Egorov of North Macedonia, winning 10-0 by technical superiority. Leading 3-0 after the first period, Sehrawat swiftly finished the match in the second period to advance to the quarterfinals.
In the quarterfinals, Sehrawat continued his dominant form, defeating Zelimkhan Abakarov of Albania with a decisive 12-0 victory, again by technical superiority. His next challenge is the highly favored Higuchi, who advanced after defeating a Puerto Rican wrestler in his quarterfinal bout.
On the other hand, India’s Anshu Malik faced a tough challenge in her first 57kg bout, losing 7-2 to USA’s Helen Maroulis.
