In an era when healthcare costs have become a source of anxiety for countless families and quality medical treatment often remains beyond the reach of the poor, the recognition of a doctor known as much for his compassion as for his clinical excellence comes as a breath of fresh air.
That is why the announcement of the Padma Shri for Dr. Palkonda Vijay Anand Reddy, one of India’s most respected oncologists and a proud son of Telangana, filled me with immense joy and pride. It is not merely a personal honour bestowed upon an outstanding physician; it is a national salute to a life dedicated to healing, hope, and humanity.
For decades, Dr. Vijay Anand Reddy has stood at the forefront of cancer care in India, combining medical brilliance with an unwavering commitment to serving those who cannot afford treatment. While many know him as the Director and Senior Consultant Oncologist at Apollo Cancer Centres, Hyderabad, thousands of families know him by another name — a doctor who never turned away a patient in need.

As a friend and well-wisher, I have personally referred several patients and families facing financial distress. Time and again, I witnessed his readiness to help. There was never a question of whether they could pay. His primary concern was whether they could be treated. Such compassion is rare, and perhaps even rarer in today’s highly commercialized healthcare environment.
The Padma Shri announced on the eve of Republic Day 2026 is therefore a fitting recognition of more than four decades of service in oncology. Born and educated in Hyderabad, Dr. Reddy completed his MBBS and MD from Osmania Medical College before pursuing advanced specialization in Radiation Oncology. His quest for excellence took him to leading institutions across the United Kingdom, the United States, Australia and Germany, where he trained in cutting-edge cancer treatment technologies.

Yet his greatest contribution was not what he learned abroad, but what he brought back home.
Over the years, he pioneered several advances in radiation oncology in India, introducing innovative treatment approaches that improved patient outcomes while preserving quality of life. His work in ocular oncology and retinoblastoma has been particularly significant, bringing hope to countless children afflicted with cancer.
However, medical achievements alone do not define Dr. Vijay Anand Reddy.

His true legacy lies in his belief that healthcare is a social responsibility. Recognizing the devastating financial burden cancer imposes on families, he established the CURE Foundation in 2003. Through this initiative, thousands of underprivileged patients have received access to affordable and often free treatment. For nearly three decades, children from economically weaker families have benefitted from cancer care that would otherwise have remained inaccessible.
His philosophy has always been simple yet profound: cancer does not affect only a patient; it impacts entire families emotionally, socially, and financially. It is this understanding that has shaped his approach to medicine and made him a physician trusted not only for his expertise but also for his empathy.
Beyond patient care, Dr. Reddy has played a pivotal role in shaping oncology education and practice in India. As President of the Association of Radiation Oncologists of India and Chairman of the Indian College of Radiation Oncology, he helped raise professional standards and mentor future generations of cancer specialists.

What makes this recognition even more special is his humility. Upon receiving the Padma Shri, he dedicated the honour to his patients, teachers, family, and colleagues. Such humility is often the hallmark of truly great individuals.
As friends, colleagues, and admirers gather to celebrate his achievement, Telangana has every reason to be proud. Dr. Vijay Anand Reddy’s journey reminds us that the noblest form of medicine is not merely curing disease but restoring hope.
The Padma Shri has found a deserving recipient. In honouring Dr. Vijay Anand Reddy, the nation has honoured the timeless values of service, compassion, and selfless commitment to humanity.
