Thiruvananthapuram: (Sep 7) Noted filmmaker R Sarath died at a private hospital here on Monday while undergoing treatment for health-related ailments, industry sources said here.
He was 65.
Sarath, who made a mark in Malayalam cinema as a director, screenwriter and storyteller, was also known for his contributions to Keralam’s social and cultural life.
The FEFKA (Film Employees Federation of Kerala) Directors’ Union condoled his death and expressed condolences to his family and loved ones.
A career marked by critical recognition
Sarath’s best-known film, Sayahnam, released in 2000 and went on to earn major recognition. It won the Indira Gandhi Award and received seven Kerala State Film Awards that year.
He followed it with films such as Sthithi, Sheelabathi, Buddhanum Chaplinum Chirikkunnu, Swayam and Paradise. His 2011 film The Desire – A Journey of a Woman also brought international recognition, winning the Best Narrative Feature Film award at the Geneva International Film Festival.
But Sarath’s filmmaking extended well beyond feature cinema. He directed short films including Achinte Katha, Chumar Chithrangal, Bhoomikkoru Charama Geetham and Mahatma Gandhi Road.
From Raja Ravi Varma to the Bhopal tragedy
Sarath’s interests as a filmmaker frequently intersected with art and social history. He made a documentary on the paintings of Raja Ravi Varma that received international attention. He was also a mural artist and received the Central Government’s Junior Fellowship for his work in the field.
Among his other notable projects was Burial of Dreams, which dealt with the Bhopal gas tragedy and attracted attention at the national level. His varied body of work reflected a filmmaker who was equally interested in cinema as an art form and as a means of engaging with larger social and cultural questions.
Sarath was born in Vilakkudy in Kollam district. He studied English at Mahatma Gandhi College in Thiruvananthapuram and later pursued postgraduate studies at University College.
His association with the media began before his entry into government service, when he worked as a journalist with Kerala Kaumudi. He later joined the Kerala government’s Public Relations Department and retired in 2021 as Deputy Director.
Sarath also trained at the Film and Television Institute of India in Pune, where he completed a Film Appreciation course.
