New Delhi: The Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) on Saturday announced the immediate withdrawal of its agitation at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar after reaching an agreement with the Centre on its key demands, hours after Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan resigned from office.
Facing spiralling protests over the NEET paper leak issue, Pradhan resigned on Saturday, saying it was not a matter of “individual prestige” for him and that he wanted to prevent anti-national forces from exploiting the situation at Jantar Mantar and elsewhere in the country.
CJP chief Abhijeet Dipke welcomed the resignation, calling it the movement’s “first victory”, while activist Sonam Wangchuk described it as “a victory of democracy”.
Opposition parties also hailed Pradhan’s resignation, describing it as a victory for students and sustained public protest over the alleged NEET paper leak, while pressing for wider reforms, accountability for alleged police excesses and an apology from Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
LOP Rahul Gandhi congratulated the students for sustaining the protests and described Pradhan’s resignation as “a huge step towards rebuilding our education system”, adding that “the time has come to remove this government.”
