Dattatreya Math is situated at Narad Ghat on the western bank of the sacred River Ganga in Varanasi (Kashi), Uttar Pradesh. Narad Ghat lies between Manasarovar Ghat and Raja Ghat and is one of the spiritually significant ghats of Kashi. The Math has served as an important centre of Datta worship, spiritual learning and Guru tradition for more than a century.
The present Dattatreya Math was established around 1888 CE by the revered saint Swami Sativedananda Dattatreya. Although the Math itself is over 135 years old, Narad Ghat has been a sacred place of pilgrimage for many centuries and has been closely associated with saints, scholars and seekers of spiritual wisdom.
The Math is dedicated to Lord Dattatreya, worshipped as the eternal Guru (Adi Guru) and the embodiment of the Holy Trinity—Lord Brahma, Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva. The shrine houses the sacred idol of Lord Dattatreya along with the revered Datta Padukas. Adjacent to the Math is the Dattatreyeshwar Temple, where Lord Shiva is worshipped, symbolizing the inseparable connection between Lord Dattatreya and the ancient spiritual heritage of Kashi.
The Math reflects the traditional architecture of the ancient monasteries of Kashi. A simple entrance opens into a peaceful courtyard leading to the sanctum of Lord Dattatreya. The adjoining Dattatreyeshwar Temple follows the classic temple style seen along the ghats of Varanasi. The serene surroundings, prayer halls and sacred atmosphere make the Math an ideal place for meditation, Vedic chanting and Guru worship.
Towards the end of the nineteenth century, Swami Sativedananda Dattatreya, a revered saint from South India, established the Dattatreya Math at Narad Ghat to promote the teachings of Lord Dattatreya and preserve the Guru tradition in Kashi. Along with founding the monastery, he also built the Dattatreyeshwar Temple and renovated parts of Narad Ghat.

Over the years, the Math has become an important spiritual centre for devotees of the Datta Sampradaya. Saints, scholars and pilgrims from different parts of India visit the Math to perform Guru Puja, study sacred scriptures and seek the blessings of Lord Dattatreya. The uninterrupted tradition of worship continues to this day.
Kashi has always been revered as the eternal city of Lord Shiva and the supreme centre of spiritual knowledge. According to the Datta tradition, Lord Dattatreya, the eternal Guru and embodiment of the Trimurti, has an everlasting spiritual presence in this sacred city, guiding sincere seekers towards wisdom and liberation.
It is believed that the establishment of the Dattatreya Math at Narad Ghat was not merely the founding of a monastery but the revival of the timeless Guru tradition in Kashi. Devotees believe that worshipping Lord Dattatreya at this sacred Math, followed by a holy dip in the River Ganga and darshan of Shri Kashi Vishwanath, brings the blessings of the Guru, removes ignorance and leads the devotee towards spiritual enlightenment.
The sacred Datta Padukas enshrined in the Math symbolize the eternal presence of Lord Dattatreya. Even today, devotees gather here to perform Guru Puja, meditate, chant the Guru Charitra and seek divine guidance. The peaceful atmosphere of the Math continues to inspire countless spiritual aspirants and preserves the ancient Datta tradition in the holy city of Kashi.
Datta Jayanti is the grandest festival celebrated at the Math, attracting devotees from across India for special pujas, bhajans and spiritual discourses. Guru Purnima is observed with great devotion as devotees offer worship to Lord Dattatreya and the sacred Guru Padukas. Maha Shivaratri is celebrated with special rituals at the adjoining Dattatreyeshwar Temple, while Kartika Purnima and Ganga Dussehra witness large gatherings of pilgrims visiting Narad Ghat. Daily Guru Puja, Datta Paduka Puja, Vedic chanting and the recitation of Sri Guru Charitra are an integral part of the temple’s spiritual traditions
