Mumbai: Dharmendra, the star who wrote himself into showbiz legend in a 65-year career spanning 300 films ranging from “Satyakam’ to “Sholay”, died here on Monday, police said here. He was 89.
There was no confirmation from the family.
The actor, who would have turned 90 on December 8, was not keeping well for a while and was in and out of a Mumbai hospital with the family finally deciding to continue his treatment at home earlier this month.
A police statement said Dharmendra died this morning and funeral arrangements are being made at the Pawan Hans crematorium in Ville Parle suburb of Mumbai.
As news of his demise spread, senior actors Amitabh Bachchan and Aamir Khan were among the first to reach Mumbai’s Pawan Hans Crematorium, where crowds gathered for a final farewell. Soon after, Salman Khan, currently juggling Bigg Boss 19 and the shoot of Battle of Galwan, also arrived to pay his last respects to the beloved star. Salman shared an extremely close relationship with Dharmendra, who was known to love him like his own son.
Visuals from outside Dharmendra’s home show son Sunny Deol arriving looking visibly distraught. Esha Deol was also seen entering the residence soon after, heading straight inside without addressing the waiting media. Hema Malini is also present with the family.
Dharmendra, who was recently discharged from Breach Candy Hospital following treatment for breathlessness, had reportedly been recovering at home. However, sources suggested his condition deteriorated on Thursday morning, prompting emergency medical intervention.
This comes shortly after Dharmendra’s family had expressed frustration earlier this month when false death rumours had begun circulating online. His children Sunny and Esha had urged the public not to spread unverified news.
Dharmendra remains one of Hindi cinema’s most iconic and beloved stars, remembered for unforgettable performances in films such as Sholay, Chupke Chupke, Dream Girl, Dharam Veer and Mera Gaon Mera Desh.
