How Modi Made Yoga a Global Gift

Every year on June 21, millions across the world gather to celebrate International Yoga Day. From New York’s Times Square to the beaches of Australia, from the parks of Europe to the villages of India, people come together for a simple yet profound purpose — to embrace health, harmony and inner peace through Yoga.

As the world prepares once again for this celebration, it is important to remember the individual whose vision transformed Yoga from India’s ancient heritage into a global movement: Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

In 2014, while addressing the United Nations General Assembly, Narendra Modi proposed that the world dedicate a day to Yoga. The response was unprecedented. A record 177 countries co-sponsored the resolution, leading the United Nations to declare June 21 as International Yoga Day. Rarely has any proposal received such overwhelming global support in such a short period.

The reason was simple. Yoga belongs to humanity.

Yoga transcends religion, nationality, language, caste and political boundaries. It is neither a ritual nor an ideology. It is a timeless science of wellness that originated in Bharat thousands of years ago to strengthen the body, calm the mind and elevate the human spirit.

At a time when the world is grappling with stress, anxiety, lifestyle diseases and mental health challenges, Yoga offers a natural and holistic solution. It requires no expensive equipment, no special infrastructure and no membership fees. All it requires is commitment and a willingness to invest a few minutes every day in one’s own well-being.

Prime Minister Modi has consistently emphasized that Yoga is not merely a physical exercise but a way of life. His initiatives such as “Yoga at Home,” “Har Ghar Yoga,” and the integration of Yoga into schools, educational institutions and public wellness programmes have helped bring this ancient practice into millions of households.

The Covid-19 pandemic further reinforced the importance of maintaining physical fitness and mental resilience. During those difficult years, Yoga became a source of strength and hope for countless individuals across the world.

More importantly, Yoga has emerged as one of India’s most powerful contributions to humanity. It has enhanced India’s global stature and demonstrated that our civilizational wisdom remains relevant in addressing modern challenges. In many ways, Yoga has become a symbol of India’s message to the world — a message of peace, balance, harmony and the timeless ideal of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam — the world is one family.

This year’s celebrations carry special significance for Hyderabad and Telangana.

Under the leadership of Union Minister G. Kishan Reddy, a major International Yoga Day event will be held at the LB Stadium in Hyderabad on June 20, 2026, beginning at 5:30 a.m. The programme is intended to be a people’s movement and a celebration of collective well-being. It is not about politics. It is about health. It is about families. It is about building a fitter and happier society.

I therefore appeal to every citizen — students, professionals, homemakers, senior citizens, sportspersons and families — to participate in large numbers. Bring your friends, neighbours, and children. Let us demonstrate that Hyderabad stands firmly behind the message of wellness and self-discipline.

After all, the greatest investment we can make is in our own health. As Prime Minister Modi often says, every individual should strive to become their own first doctor. Prevention is always better than cure, and Yoga remains one of the most effective pathways to achieving that goal.

Let us not view Yoga Day as just another event on the calendar. Let us make it the beginning of a healthier lifestyle.

On June 20, let thousands gather at LB Stadium. Let every yoga mat become a symbol of commitment to personal wellness and national strength.

A healthy citizen builds a healthy family. Healthy families build a healthy society. And a healthy society builds a strong Bharat.

This International Yoga Day, let us do more than celebrate Yoga.

Let us live it.
