Kolkata: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast thunderstorms and rain in all the districts of the state on Monday.
Issuing an orange warning, the IMD said that thunderstorms, accompanied by rain and gusty wind reaching speeds of 50 to 60 kmph, are very likely to occur over all the districts of south Bengal on Monday, the day votes for the West Bengal assembly elections will be counted.
The IMD said that thundershowers are very likely at many places in north Bengal on Monday, with the intensity being higher in Malda, Alipurduar, and Jalpaiguri districts.
The weather department has also predicted light rainfall, thunderstorms, and lightning later in the day, even in the national capital, Delhi. . Along with rain, strong winds may develop, reaching speeds of 30-40 kmph, with gusts going up to 50 kmph.
These conditions are most likely during the afternoon and evening, when sudden weather changes could occur. Residents are advised to remain cautious, especially while travelling or staying outdoors during stormy conditions. The IMD has issued a yellow alert for Delhi for the next two days. This alert is a warning to stay aware of possible weather disruptions such as gusty winds, lightning, and brief rain spells.
The IMD also said that Karnataka is also moving into an active pre-monsoon phase, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing a yellow alert for rain, thunderstorms and gusty winds across 15 districts, including Bengaluru. The forecast, valid from April 26 to April 30, 2026, signals a gradual build-up in weather activity, with the most intense phase expected towards the end of the month.
According to IMD, the current spell is being driven by a trough or wind discontinuity extending from North Interior Karnataka to the Comorin region, along with an anti-cyclonic circulation over interior Maharashtra. Together, these systems are creating instability in the atmosphere, setting the stage for thunderstorms across large parts of the state.
