I wish a goalkeeper wins Golden Ball: Subrata Paul hails World Cup shot-stoppers

New Delhi: This FIFA World Cup will be remembered not only for the brilliance of attacking superstars such as Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappe, Erling Haaland and Harry Kane, but also for the extraordinary, match-defining performances of goalkeepers, according to former India captain and legendary custodian Subrata Paul.

Paul, whose professional career spanned nearly two decades and included 84 senior international appearances for India, believes the teams that have reached the business end of the ongoing FIFA World Cup owe much of their success to their goalkeepers.

The former India captain, who played a pivotal role in the country’s Nehru Cup triumphs in 2007, 2009 and 2012, said exceptional goalkeeping has been as decisive as the exploits of the tournament’s attacking stars.

Fondly known as the “Spiderman” of Indian football, Subrata Paul earned his iconic nickname after an unbelievable 35+ save performance in the 2011 AFC Asian Cup against South Korea. Having hung up his boots in late 2023, he frequently highlights the immense pressure, sharp reflexes, and match-winning capabilities required of a modern goalkeeper on the global stage.

Historically, it is incredibly rare for a goalkeeper to claim individual top honors like the Golden Ball, which usually favors prolific goalscorers or creative playmakers. However, shot-stoppers continually shape the trajectory of World Cups. Notable recent examples include Gianluigi Donnarumma winning the UEFA Euro Player of the Tournament and Emiliano Martínez’s heroics securing the FIFA World Cup for Argentina, proving that elite goalkeeping can be just as decisive as clinical finishing.
