The Silence of a Dying Earth

We are introducing this new page, aptly titled “Young Pens,” to encourage school and college students who have a flair for writing poetry, drawing inspiration from their imagination and their understanding of the world around them. We begin this initiative with a second-year B.Sc. (Biotechnology) student. — EDITOR

When the last leaf withers and rots,

Leaving a once lush garden with empty pots,

When the last forest is destroyed by greed,

Burnt away by the fire of human deeds,

For the day where no trees can be found,

That day shall be marked by the absence of sound.

When oceans keep getting poisoned every day,

Killing the deep seas, leaving populations in decay,

When our rivers are treated as bins of waste,

The once holy identity with pollution replaced,

For the day where no lakes and rivers are clean,

That day shall be marked by life hence unseen.

When we pollute our air with toxins endless,

Created of rampant industries fueled by avarice relentless,

When we know of our own evils, but offer no opposition,

The ones who could’ve saved us, now gone by our own destruction,

For the day when we yearn for fresh air,

That day shall be marked by the orchards we’ve run bare.

When we look around the wasteland of our creation,

The natural beauty we have robbed of future generation,

When we dream of the verdant acres that now remain but memories,

The lost vestiges of God’s sculptures, which remain as simple legacies,

For the day we remember of all we chose to sell,

That day shall be marked by the last tree that fell.
