New Delhi: The Prime Minister Internship Scheme (PMIS) has been designed to help bridge the gap between industry expectations and the skills of candidates who apply for jobs, Finance and Corporate Affairs Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said on Friday.
Under the PMIS, implemented by the Ministry of Corporate Affairs, those in the 18-25 age group are eligible to join and the interns receive a minimum financial assistance of Rs 9,000 per month. The third round of the pilot phase of the scheme is underway.
Interacting with the interns here, Sitharaman said the scheme has been designed after interactions with industry people as well as graduates and those who completed ITI courses.
Employers expect fresh graduates to be workplace-ready and many young graduates require practical exposure to meet those expectations. The scheme is helping bridge this gap by providing young people with hands-on industry experience, the minister said.
According to her, the scheme also enables the youth to pursue internship opportunities in areas of interest.
Through the scheme, she said, the candidates will be able to get additional skills beyond their qualifications.
The ministry also organised the PMIS Industry Awards in the national capital to recognise the contribution of partner companies in the implementation of the scheme during its pilot phase.
Final-year graduate and post-graduate students can also participate in the pilot phase of the scheme.
