New Delhi: Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy met with Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Monday to invite them to a public meeting in Warangal focused on the state’s farm debt waiver program.
This meeting follows the state government’s initiation of the first phase of its loan waiver scheme on July 18. Reddy emphasized the symbolic significance of Warangal, where the farm-loan waiver was initially promised by the Congress during a campaign rally in the Assembly polls.
The Telangana Congress unit plans to hold a public meeting in Warangal to highlight the implementation of the farm-loan waiver, as it was a key campaign promise. The chief minister wants to convey to the Congress leadership that Warangal, being the location where the waiver was announced, is the ideal venue to underscore the scheme’s implementation.
The first phase of the loan waiver scheme, initiated on July 18, saw Rs 6,098 crore credited to farmers’ bank accounts. This phase covers loans of up to Rs 1 lakh. The scheme will roll out in three phases, with the second phase targeting loans of up to Rs 1.5 lakh by the end of July, and the final phase covering loans of up to Rs 2 lakh in August. Reddy’s visit to Delhi underscores the significance of this flagship scheme on the Congress government’s agenda.
The farm loan waiver was a major promise that contributed to the party’s electoral success in Telangana. Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka, Irrigation Minister N Uttam Kumar Reddy, and AICC Telangana Affairs Incharge Deepa Dasmunshi accompanied Revanth Reddy during his meeting with Priyanka Gandhi.
