Shri Ramnath Mahadev Temple is located in the historic town of Petlad in Anand District, Gujarat, in the fertile Charotar region. It is one of the prominent Shiva temples of central Gujarat and is visited by devotees from across Anand, Kheda and the surrounding districts throughout the year.
The exact period of construction of Shri Ramnath Mahadev Temple is not known, as no historical inscriptions or records mentioning its origin have been discovered. However, local tradition believes that the shrine is several centuries old. The present temple has undergone renovations over the years, while the sacred Shivalinga is believed to have been worshipped continuously for generations, preserving the temple’s ancient spiritual heritage.
The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva, who is worshipped here as Shri Ramnath Mahadev. The main deity is an ancient Shivalinga, regarded by devotees as highly sacred and spiritually powerful.
The temple complex also houses shrines dedicated to Goddess Parvati, Lord Ganesha, Lord Hanuman, and Nandi, the divine vehicle of Lord Shiva. Every day, devotees offer water, milk, Bilva leaves and flowers to the Shivalinga while chanting Om Namah Shivaya.
The temple is built in the traditional architectural style of Gujarat’s Shiva temples. It consists of a Garbhagriha (sanctum sanctorum) housing the sacred Shivalinga, a spacious Mandapa (prayer hall) for devotees, and a beautifully designed entrance leading into the temple complex.
A Nandi shrine stands directly in front of the sanctum, while the temple’s shikhara rises above the sanctum in the traditional Nagara style. Although renovated over time, the temple retains its simplicity, serenity and spiritual atmosphere, making it an ideal place for prayer and meditation.
Shri Ramnath Mahadev Temple has been an important centre of Shiva worship in Petlad for several centuries. Although the identity of its founder and the exact date of construction remain unknown, the temple has continuously served as a place for daily worship, Vedic rituals and religious gatherings.

Over the years, local devotees and patrons have carefully preserved and renovated the temple, ensuring that its ancient traditions continue uninterrupted. Today, it remains one of the most revered Shiva temples in the Petlad region and a significant pilgrimage centre for devotees across Gujarat.
According to the sacred local tradition, the name Ramnath is associated with Lord Rama.
After defeating Ravana in Lanka, Lord Rama wished to atone for the sin of Brahmahatya, since Ravana, despite being an unrighteous king, was also a learned Brahmin and a great devotee of Lord Shiva. Seeking purification, Lord Rama undertook a pilgrimage to several sacred Shiva temples across Bharat.
During this journey, Lord Rama is believed to have arrived at the present-day Petlad region. Drawn by the sanctity of the place, he worshipped the ancient Shivalinga with great devotion, performing Abhishekam with sacred water, offering Bilva leaves and flowers, and praying sincerely to Lord Shiva.
Pleased with Rama’s humility and devotion, Lord Shiva blessed him and freed him from the effects of Brahmahatya. From that day onwards, the deity came to be worshipped as Ramnath Mahadev, meaning “Lord Shiva worshipped by Lord Rama.”
Another local belief states that saints and sages travelling through the Charotar region regularly meditated and performed penance at this sacred shrine. Their continued worship is believed to have enhanced the temple’s spiritual energy, and devotees believe that sincere prayers offered here remove obstacles, reduce the burden of past karmas and bring peace and prosperity.
Mahashivaratri is the most important festival celebrated with special Abhishekam, Rudrabhishek, Maha Aarti, and night-long prayers. During the holy month of Shravan, devotees offer milk, water, and Bilva leaves to Lord Shiva every Monday. Pradosham is observed twice every month with special Shiva Pujas, while Nag Panchami and Kartik Purnima are also celebrated with great devotion by the local devotees.
