Sachh Ram Hi Jane

The Ram Mandir in Ayodhya was built on centuries of faith, sacrifice and the trust of millions of devotees. That is precisely why allegations of financial irregularities cannot be brushed aside nor politically exploited. In matters involving Lord Ram, truth cannot remain hidden behind slogans — transparency alone can preserve both faith and accountability.

The phrase “Sachh Ram hi jane” (only Lord Ram knows the truth) may sound poetic, but it has now become an uncomfortable metaphor for the growing controversy surrounding the finances of the Ram Mandir in Ayodhya.

For crores of Hindus, this is not merely another temple. It is the culmination of a centuries-old civilisational struggle, legal perseverance and emotional investment. Millions believe Ayodhya to be the birthplace of Lord Ram and regard the temple’s construction as the correction of a historical wrong.

The movement itself was not born overnight. For decades, organisations associated with the BJP, alongside several Hindu groups and countless ordinary devotees, spearheaded a mass movement seeking the reclamation of the disputed site where the Babri Masjid once stood. Historical records and scholarly debates have long revolved around the destruction of pre-existing temples during the Mughal era, not only in Ayodhya but also in Kashi and Mathura.

The issue eventually moved from the streets to the courts and culminated in the landmark 2019 Supreme Court verdict. Thereafter, the BJP-led NDA government facilitated the creation of the temple trust, and the magnificent Ram Mandir was inaugurated with unprecedented national enthusiasm.

Faith triumphed. Emotions overflowed. Donations poured in.

Devotees did not merely contribute money; they donated gold ornaments, silver artefacts, idols and family heirlooms accumulated over generations. Many saw their offerings not as charity, but as a sacred duty towards Lord Ram himself.

That is precisely why the emerging allegations are deeply disturbing.

Some devotees now claim they never received official receipts for their donations. Opposition leaders have alleged that between ₹7 crore and ₹7.5 crore may have gone missing from temple donation collections. Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge has gone a step further, alleging that nearly ₹5,000 crore was misused in the name of temple construction.

Then came the explosive land transaction controversy. Critics allege that a parcel of land purchased for around ₹2 crore was sold to the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust for ₹18.5 crore within minutes, naturally raising questions about valuation and transparency.

These are serious allegations. They cannot be brushed aside merely because they concern a sacred institution.

At the same time, allegations are not convictions.

The Trust has categorically denied any wrongdoing, maintaining that every transaction is audited and transparent. The Uttar Pradesh government has constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT), and reports suggest that the Prime Minister’s Office has also sought details regarding these financial concerns.

This is exactly how a mature democracy must function. Institutions must investigate. Facts must prevail. Evidence must speak louder than politics.

What must not happen, however, is the conversion of genuine accountability into political opportunism.

There is a clear distinction between questioning financial irregularities and attempting to undermine the faith of millions. Any wrongdoing, if established, must invite the harshest punishment irrespective of who is involved. Equally, baseless allegations should not become tools to discredit an entire civilisational project that holds immense emotional significance for millions of Hindus.

The Ram Mandir was built through public trust. Therefore, public trust must remain its greatest asset.

This controversy also carries a larger lesson. Sacredness does not grant immunity from scrutiny. Temples, trusts and religious institutions handling thousands of crores in public donations must voluntarily embrace the highest standards of transparency. Every rupee, every gram of gold and every acre of land must be digitally recorded, publicly disclosed and independently audited.

Nor is Ayodhya the first shrine to face such questions. In the past, similar controversies have surfaced around the Sri Venkateswara Swamy Temple at Tirumala, one of the wealthiest and most revered Hindu pilgrimage centres in the world. Allegations ranged from embezzlement of cash and ornaments offered through the hundi, claims of missing jewellery belonging to Lord Venkateswara, controversies over depositing large quantities of temple gold with banks, and more recently, the Laddu prasadam controversy. Over the years, however, many of these allegations were examined and clarified through inquiries conducted by state and central agencies. The lesson is simple: transparency does not weaken faith; it protects it.

After all, devotees are not stakeholders seeking profits; they are believers offering their faith.

And faith, once betrayed, is infinitely harder to restore than any missing ledger entry.

Lord Ram does not need protection from politicians, opposition parties or temple administrators. It is the devotees who deserve protection — protection from corruption, opacity and the misuse of their sacred trust.

Was this merely a politically manufactured controversy, or was there indeed a betrayal of devotees’ faith?

That question cannot be answered through television debates, partisan slogans or social media campaigns. It can only be answered through a fair, transparent, and time-bound investigation.

Lord Ram won a centuries-old battle for justice. His devotees should not now be forced to fight another battle for transparency. Faith may be eternal, but public trust is fragile. If even a shadow of corruption has crept into Ayodhya, it must be exposed without fear or favour. And if the allegations are false, they too must be buried with evidence.

Until then, one refrain will continue to echo across Bharat — Sachch Ram hi jane.

For now, only Lord Ram may know the complete truth. But in a constitutional democracy, truth cannot remain in the heavens forever. It must eventually emerge on earth, backed not by slogans or sentiments, but by facts, accountability and justice.
