Mirabai Chanu added more laurels to her already rich CV and won her third consecutive gold medal at the Commonwealth Games 2026 on Sunday.
The diminutive weightlifter from Manipur finished with a total lift of 190 kgs in both rounds (snatch & clean and jerk) combined, also helping her set the new Commonwealth Games record in the weight category. This was also India’s first gold medal at the ongoing Commonwealth Games.
This was Mirabai’s fourth medal at the Commonwealth Games, having claimed a silver medal in the 2014 edition, followed by gold in 2018 and 2022 editions.
Defending her Commonwealth Games crown, Mirabai started with 82kg in her first attempt in the snatch round. However, she failed to complete it, also leaving her stunned.
Before stepping onto the platform for her second attempt, same weight, she let out a loud roar and executed it comfortably. The successful lift also helped her set the new Commonwealth Games record in snatch for the respective weight category, which was rewritten by the Tokyo Olympic silver medallist in her next attempt. Mirabai raised the weight by three more kgs for her third and final attempt in snatch, which she completed without dropping a sweat and made it the new record.
Mirabai started the clean and jerk round similarly. Attempting 105kg in her first attempt, she failed to execute it. She let out a similar roar before going for her second attempt and completed it with ease. The 105kg lift is also the new Commonwealth Games record in the clean and jerk for the respective weight category.
This was India’s second medal in weightlifting at the ongoing Games with Rishikanta Singh winning a silver in the men’s 60kg category earlier in the day.
In total, India has won three medals (1 gold, 1 silver, and 1 bronze) at this edition of the CWG.
