In recent times, pornography is entering the parliament house, classrooms, kitchens, and bedrooms. As a whole, compulsive sexual behaviors pose many problems in modern civilization.

Several instances of lawmakers watching pornography within parliamentary buildings have caused controversy. Notably, UK MP Neil Parish resigned in 2022 after admitting to watching porn in the House of Commons. Similarly, in India, MLAs and ministers have faced scandals for viewing pornography on mobile phones during assembly sessions in 2012 and 2023. Employees in several offices are caught while watching pornography during working hours. It has now become epidemic proportions with a serious infectious nature among youth, the old, women and all classes of the population.

Challenging pornography can also be called as problematic pornography use (PPU), often described as an inability to control viewing habit of different modes of sexual postures and acts is strongly associated with higher levels of anxiety, depression, loneliness, and, in some cases, suicidal ideation among youth and also the Gen-Z generation. Boys are exposed to porn from the age 10 to 11, and girls from the age 12 to 13. By age 16 about 70% of boys watch porn four to five times per week. A common concern to parents and researchers is whether pornography can be an addiction. Based on available research, pornography is linked to mental health crises, not purely identified as a leading cause of suicide. The primary causes of suicide worldwide are major depressive disorder and other mental health conditions, with addiction to pornography adding petrol to the fire.

Problematic pornography use vs. General Consumption: Research focuses on “Problematic Pornography Use” (PPU) or addiction, not individually general consumption. Studies indicate that PPU can lead to significant guilt, shame, and hopelessness, which are known risks for suicidal ideation. One study found that PPU was associated with a higher self-perceived likelihood of suicidal thoughts and behaviour. Another study found that 51% of revenge porn victims surveyed had considered suicide. The gender differences are that studies suggest a complex link where men may report higher instances of PPU, while women with PPU may have a stronger link to depression, stress, and anxiety. It was also found age and risk are where research has shown that PPU and its associated mental health risks are particularly acute among young adults. While pornography consumption is highly prevalent, it is generally considered a contributing behavioral factor linked to distress rather than a primary driver of suicide itself. If anybody is struggling to avoid pornography, help is available in mental health care centres are mental health professionals, or a suicide prevention lifeline.

The Mental Health and Suicidality among Young Adults has not been much researched. However, with the limited studies, it is found that the relationship between suicidality and problematic pornography use (PPU) is not clear, and the inadequate investigational data that exists show contradictory results. In one recent study, the associations between two variables in a sample of young adults, taking into account gender differences and the role of loneliness, emotional states, and well-being. A total of 332 national and international students (60% female) at an Italian University with a mean age of 23 years (SD = 2.84) completed an anonymous online survey during the period from March 2023 to May 2023. The results show that PPU was associated with higher levels of anxiety, depression, stress, loneliness, and suicide ideation, as well as lower life satisfaction. Gender comparison analysis revealed significantly higher scores for PPU and loneliness among men, while women scored higher in stress, anxiety, and life satisfaction. Significant correlations between PPU and suicidal ideation and having a suicide plan were established for female participants despite their lower scores in PPU. Multiple regression analysis revealed that PPU and its interaction with gender were both significant predictors of suicidal ideation. New studies to be conducted that how young women may be influenced by exposure to sexually explicit materials, while always considering the role of loneliness.

Internet Pornography

According to the publication of research studies in the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health volume 21, 2024, pornography consumption has dramatically risen in the last few decades, and the Internet has played a substantial role in this uptrend. Particularly after the outbreak of the COVID-19 virus worldwide, the mandatory quarantine period caused drastic changes in several areas of individuals’ lives, including Internet pornography use. A data report retrieved from one of the most trafficked websites globally, Porn hub, shows that with the spread of the pandemic, the traffic to Porn hub skyrocketed. The increase in Porn hub access was significantly associated with the spread of the virus. Not surprisingly, this turn of events pointed to the issue of PPU, widening the interest in research on the topic.

Noted scientist Cooper in 1998 proposed an appealing platform for sexual purposes, which he named ‘Triple-A Engine’, in which the triple-A structure refers to the Accessibility, Affordability, and Anonymity of the Internet. Thus, the fact that material can be accessed quickly and usually free of charge, while keeping the identity unsigned, may encourage its use, even in the presence of harmful effects. Potentially, those who engage with pornography to mitigate negative feelings and escape reality could be in danger of encountering problems related to its use.

PPU encompasses difficulties in terms of controlling the frequency, duration, or intensity of pornography use, all of which can disrupt daily functioning, relationships, or general well-being. Some well-established negative effects related to PPU include sexual aggression, loneliness, distress, depression, and anxiety, neuroticism, sexual dissatisfaction and marital problems, negative body image, moral incongruence, low self-esteem and poor attachment, and isolation. Some persons looking at pornography expect similar sexual modalities with his or her marital partner or causal partner. In many cases this formula may not work out. Some pornographic websites exhibit unnatural and atrocious sexual behaviours, mirroring those in individual lives may lead to devastation. Moreover, in previous studies, hypersexual behaviors that usually include porn dependency showed links with executive impairment. A more recent review by Castro-Calvo et al., in 2021 revealed that PPU shows associations more specifically with cognitive functions such as attentional bias, inhibitory control, working memory, and decision-making (e.g., a tendency to choose short-term benefits).

In the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) and its Text Revision (DSM-5 TR), the choice of pornography content is a diagnostic indicator for some disorders but is not recognized as a separate entity. Recent Neuroscientific studies showed that there are similarities in terms of brain responses on the part of individuals with Internet addictions (including betting, online shopping, and pornography use) and drug addictions, sparking debates about whether PPU is a form of addiction or a disorder. Conversely, some feminist scholars have expressed concerns regarding the medicalization of “porn addiction” by perceiving it as an illness. (To be concluded).
