Punaura Dham Surya Mandir is located at Punaura Dham, around 5 km southwest of Sitamarhi town in Sitamarhi district, Bihar. The temple stands on the eastern bank of the sacred Janaki Kund within the famous Punaura Dham complex, which is traditionally revered as the birthplace of Goddess Sita. It is one of the oldest and most sacred Surya temples in the Mithila region and attracts devotees from Bihar, Nepal, and other parts of India, especially during Chhath Puja.
The origins of the temple are traced to the Treta Yuga according to local tradition. It is believed that the original place of worship was established by Maharishi Pundrik thousands of years ago. The present temple structure is modern and was constructed between 1985 and 1991 over the ancient sacred site where the sage worshipped Lord Surya. Thus, while the existing shrine is only a few decades old, the place of worship itself is considered to be of great antiquity and associated with the Ramayana period.
The presiding deity is Lord Surya Narayana, the Hindu Sun God. The temple enshrines a beautiful idol of Surya Bhagavan along with the ancient sacred Pinda (symbolic representation of the Sun God) believed to have been established by Maharishi Pundrik. Devotees offer water (Arghya), red flowers, wheat, jaggery, and prayers seeking good health, prosperity, success, and relief from planetary afflictions related to the Sun. During Chhath Puja, thousands of devotees gather here to offer Arghya to the rising and setting Sun at the nearby Janaki Kund.
The present temple has a simple North Indian temple design with a sanctum housing the idol of Lord Surya. Unlike the grand medieval Sun temples of India, this shrine is modest in size and emphasizes spiritual significance rather than elaborate architectural ornamentation. Its location beside the sacred Janaki Kund and within the Punaura Dham complex gives it immense religious importance. The peaceful surroundings and sacred pond create a deeply devotional atmosphere for worshippers.
Punaura Dham has been an important spiritual centre since ancient times and is identified with the ashram of Maharishi Pundrik. According to tradition, the sage established this Surya shrine after performing intense penance and worship of Lord Surya. For centuries, devotees worshipped only the sacred Pinda installed by the sage. During 1985–1986, local devotees and the temple Mahant began constructing a proper temple over the ancient worship site, and the present shrine was completed in 1991 with the installation of the idol of Lord Surya. Today, the temple remains one of the most revered centres of Sun worship in northern Bihar.
According to the sacred tradition of Mithila, Maharishi Pundrik established his ashram at Punaura and performed severe penance to Lord Surya. Pleased with his devotion, Lord Surya blessed the sage, who then installed a divine Pinda representing the Sun God. From that day onward, Surya worship has continued uninterrupted at this sacred place.
The Surya temple is closely connected with the story of Goddess Sita. During a prolonged famine in the kingdom of Mithila, King Janaka performed a great yajna and ploughed the land near Maharishi Pundrik’s ashram as part of the sacred ritual. While ploughing the field, he discovered an earthen pot containing the divine infant Sita, whom he lovingly adopted as his daughter. Because this miraculous event occurred near Maharishi Pundrik’s ashram, the Surya Mandir became an inseparable part of the sacred landscape associated with the appearance of Goddess Sita.
It is believed that Maharishi Pundrik offered daily prayers to Lord Surya for the welfare of the kingdom and the world. Even today, devotees believe that sincere worship at this ancient Surya temple brings blessings for good health, prosperity, success in life, and removal of obstacles. Offering Arghya to the Sun God here during Chhath Puja is considered especially auspicious because of the temple’s association with Maharishi Pundrik and the divine birth of Goddess Sita.
The most important festival celebrated here is Chhath Puja, when thousands of devotees offer Arghya to the setting and rising Sun at Janaki Kund. Chaiti Chhath also attracts large numbers of pilgrims. Other important occasions include Ratha Saptami, Makar Sankranti, Sundays dedicated to Surya worship, Sita Navami, Ram Navami, and Vivaha Panchami, when devotees visiting Punaura Dham also seek the blessings of Lord Surya.
