Chennai: The Madras High Court on Wednesday reserved its order on a petition seeking a direction to the CBFC to grant censor certificate under the ‘UA 16+’ category to top star, TVK chief Vijay starrer film “Jana Nayagan.”
Justice P T Asha reserved orders on a petition filed by KVN Productions LLP, which has produced the film.
When the case came up for hearing, as directecd by the court yesterday, Additional solicitor general A R L Sunderesan produced a copy of the complaint given by one of the panel members, which examined the film.
According to Narayana, on December 22 he received a communication from the Regional Office stating that the Examining Committee had recommended granting the film a U/A certificate. As stated in their court appeal, the producers claim that the delay occurred because the film continued to be reviewed and re-examined within the CBFC even after the suggested edits were implemented.
After several days of delay, the film was reportedly referred to the Revising Committee on January 5, with the Regional Censor Office directing the producers to approach the Mumbai office.
In response to the continued delay, KVN Productions filed a petition on January 6 seeking directions for the immediate issuance of the censor certificate. The producers said that the prolonged process was unnecessary and now threatened the film’s theatrical release, as distribution and screenings cannot proceed without certification.
The CBFC responded that there was no emergency, stating that the makers had announced a release date before completing the certification process. The court has now directed the CBFC to submit documents related to the re-examination process and has adjourned the case to January 7.
Directed by H. Vinoth, Jana Nayagan also stars Pooja Hegde, Bobby Deol, and Mamitha Baiju in prominent roles.
