Kodandarama Temple- Raichur

Kodandarama Temple is a famous Hindu temple located in Raichur, Karnataka.The ancient temple which is more than 400 years old is dedicated to Lord Rama, along with his consort Sita and brother Lakshmana.

The temple is built in the Vijayanagara architectural style, featuring grand stone pillars, intricate carvings, and a majestic entrance. The sanctum houses beautifully sculpted idols of Rama. The Ranga Mantapa (pillared hall) has detailed carvings depicting stories from the Ramayana. The temple also has a towering Rajagopuram (entrance tower) that adds to its grandeur.

The temple dates back to the 16th century, when it was built during the rule of the Vijayanagara Empire. According to historical records, it was constructed under the patronage of local rulers devoted to Lord Rama. Over the centuries, various dynasties, including the Nawabs of Adil Shahi, renovated and maintained the temple, respecting its significance and allowing its worship to continue.

According to local legends, Lord Rama, along with his consort Sita and brother Lakshmana, stayed at this place for some time during their journey. The name “Kodandarama” comes from Lord Rama’s divine bow (Kodanda), which he always carried. It is said that he performed dharma upadesha (teachings of righteousness) to the sages and devotees who lived in this area at that time.

Another legend states that this region was once ruled by a righteous king who was a great devotee of Lord Rama. He had a divine vision in which Lord Rama appeared and instructed him to establish a temple in his honor. Following this vision, the beautiful temple was built in the divine form that is worshipped today.

Kodandarama Temple celebrates several Hindu festivals with great devotion. The most important is Sri Rama Navami, marking Lord Rama’s birth, with grand processions, pujas, and bhajans. During Deepavali, the temple is beautifully decorated, and special prayers are offered. Navaratri is observed with nine days of worship, culminating in Vijaya Dashami celebrations. On Hanuman Jayanti, devotees gather in large numbers to seek the blessings of Lord Hanuman. These festivals attract thousands of worshippers, creating a vibrant and spiritual atmosphere at the temple.
