National flag to be flown at half-mast during state mourning: Govt

New Delhi: A seven-day state mourning will be observed throughout the country as a mark of respect to former prime minister Manmohan Singh, who passed away last night, and during this period, the national flag will be flown at half-mast across India, the Union Home Ministry has announced.

In a communication to all chief secretaries of state and union territories on Thursday, the home ministry also said that a state funeral will be accorded to Singh and there will be no official entertainment during the period of state mourning.

“The government of India announces with profound sorrow the death of Manmohan Singh, former prime minister of India on December 26, 2024, at AIIMS hospital in New Delhi,” the communication said.

While many leading political leaders such as PM Narendra Modi, Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and others extended their last wishes to the late former Indian Prime Minister, the India national cricket team paid their last respects to him as well. The Indian cricketers walked out to the Melbourne Cricket Ground with black armbands on Day 2 of the IND vs AUS 4th Test to pay homage to the late Manmohan Singh.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also expressed his condolences on demise of Former PM Manmohan Singh. He wrote on X, “India mourns the loss of one of its most distinguished leaders, Dr. Manmohan Singh Ji. Rising from humble origins, he rose to become a respected economist. He served in various government positions as well, including as Finance Minister, leaving a strong imprint on our economic policy over the years. His interventions in Parliament were also insightful. As our Prime Minister, he made extensive efforts to improve people’s lives.”
