Hyderabad: In a major push to align with the Government of India’s Mission LiFE (Lifestyle for Environment) initiative, the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE), under the Ministry of Power, has urged the Telangana State Renewable Energy Development Corporation Ltd. (TGREDCO) to harness the state’s potential for energy efficiency investments. Emphasizing the significance of these efforts, BEE highlighted the focus on Hyderabad’s metropolitan area as a key player in driving energy-efficient growth and sustainable development.
The call for action was delivered during the 4th International Conference on Environmental Management (ICEM) organized by the Indian Society of Geomatics (ISG) in collaboration with JNTU Hyderabad. BEE’s Media Adviser underscored the need to prioritize investments in sectors such as industry, buildings, and municipal services to enhance Telangana’s energy efficiency landscape, thereby accelerating economic development and creating new employment opportunities across the state.
Mission LiFE, launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at COP26 in 2021, aims to promote a shift towards mindful consumption and a circular economy. The initiative seeks to reshape India’s environmental strategies by encouraging sustainable practices at both individual and community levels. Telangana’s proactive approach to this mission positions it as a state with significant potential for driving investment in energy efficiency, aligning economic growth with environmental sustainability.
Hyderabad’s thriving industrial sector, particularly in pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, and IT, has already established itself as a powerhouse in India’s economy. With a strategic location and robust infrastructure, the city continues to attract considerable domestic and international investments. The BEE stressed the importance of maintaining this momentum by setting high standards for energy efficiency, which could further bolster Telangana’s reputation as a hub for global investments.
During the conference, BEE called on the Telangana government to take the lead in fostering environmentally friendly lifestyles. Awareness campaigns under Mission LiFE are aimed not just at symbolic gestures but at promoting practical, quantifiable actions that can transform everyday habits. Citizens are encouraged to adopt small but impactful changes, such as switching to LED lights, reducing plastic consumption, and conserving water, to collectively contribute to India’s energy conservation efforts.
The BEE emphasized that individual actions, when scaled, could significantly impact national energy consumption and environmental well-being. The goal is to engage citizens from all walks of life, including marginalized and underserved communities, in the mission to build a sustainable future.
Key dignitaries at the ICEM event, including Jayesh Ranjan, Special Chief Secretary for Industry and IT, Government of Telangana, and Anand Mohan, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Justice, emphasized the pivotal role of state governments in advancing energy efficiency and environmental protection. Other notable attendees included international experts like Dr. Stanford Blade from ICRISAT and Dr. Beniamino Murgante from Italy, who stressed the importance of collaborative efforts in achieving global sustainability goals.
The experts at the conference highlighted the need to focus on both urban and rural areas, with a special emphasis on cities like Hyderabad, Secunderabad, and Vijayawada, which are crucial to driving Mission LiFE’s objectives in Southern India.
Mission LiFE’s framework outlines 75 actionable steps across key areas, including energy savings, water conservation, reduction of single-use plastics, adoption of sustainable food systems, waste reduction, promotion of healthy lifestyles, and minimization of e-waste. The initiative aims to mobilize at least one billion individuals worldwide to adopt these sustainable practices by 2028, aligning with India’s broader goals for environmental protection.
BEE’s Media Adviser lauded the efforts of southern states, particularly Telangana, for their proactive measures in environmental management and energy efficiency, which contribute significantly to combating climate change. The adviser stressed that Mission LiFE is not just a government mandate but a collective movement to engage communities in a sustainable future.
With a commitment to building energy-efficient and sustainable infrastructure, the Telangana government is poised to make significant strides in advancing the Mission LiFE initiative. The state’s industrial growth, coupled with the focus on green policies and environmental stewardship, is expected to create a ripple effect that will enhance its investment attractiveness and improve living standards.
The Bureau of Energy Efficiency reiterated its support for Telangana’s efforts, encouraging the state to leverage its potential in energy efficiency to become a model for other regions in India. Hyderabad’s role in leading these initiatives could pave the way for the city to emerge as a leader in promoting sustainable practices and addressing climate change at a national level.
The conference concluded with a collective resolve to strengthen public participation in implementing policies that promote energy efficiency and environmental protection, with measures such as carbon pricing, renewable energy subsidies, and stringent pollution regulations. These steps are seen as crucial in propelling Telangana and India toward a greener, more sustainable future.
