Hyderabad: Fireworks with the bat, fearless stroke-play and a nail-biting finish marked the opening match of the inaugural Sreenidhi University TG20 as Anvita Khammam Aces overcame a spirited challenge from Palamuru Strikers to register a memorable 20-run victory at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium on Sunday.

In a contest that produced a staggering 454 runs and showcased the attacking intent of both teams, the Khammam Aces held their nerve to defend a daunting 237 for five after restricting the Strikers to 217 for six in their allotted 20 overs.

While the evening belonged to Anvita Khammam Aces, Palamuru Strikers’ Vignesh Reddy almost single-handedly threatened to turn the game on its head with a breathtaking innings of 86 from just 31 deliveries.

Earlier, after being asked to bat, the Aces wasted no time in announcing their intentions. Openers Wafi Kachchhi and G. Sai Krishna Reddy launched a ferocious assault right from the outset, taking apart Nipun Reddy for 15 runs in the opening over.

The duo blended power with precision, finding gaps at will while keeping the scoreboard ticking at a frightening pace. Wafi, in particular, looked in sublime touch as he effortlessly dispatched both pace and spin to all corners of the ground.

The 19-year-old etched his name into the tournament’s history books by becoming the first player to score a half-century in the inaugural Sreenidhi University TG20. He reached the landmark in just 24 deliveries and continued to punish anything remotely loose.

The opening partnership laid a solid foundation, putting Palamuru Strikers under immediate pressure. Wafi eventually fell in the ninth over, trapped by Nipun Reddy after a scintillating innings of 60 from only 30 balls, studded with boundaries and audacious strokes all around the wicket.

However, his dismissal did little to slow down the scoring rate.

Sai Krishna Reddy seamlessly took over the mantle and continued the assault. He played a mature and enterprising knock of 52 from 32 balls before Rohit Rayudu provided some respite for the Strikers by dismissing him in the 12th over.

For a brief period, Palamuru Strikers managed to regain some control as Mickil Jaiswal contributed 9 off six deliveries and Prateek Reddy chipped in with a useful 25 from 17 balls.

But just when the Strikers sensed an opportunity to restrict the damage, K. Himateja unleashed absolute carnage.

The hard-hitting batter produced a sensational finishing act, smashing an unbeaten 59 off just 24 balls. His innings was a perfect blend of timing, power and fearless intent as he repeatedly cleared the ropes during the death overs.

Captain C.V. Milind played an equally important supporting role, scoring a quickfire 18 from 10 balls. Together, the duo ensured a grand finish by plundering 16 runs from Siddu Nayak’s final over.

By the end of the innings, Anvita Khammam Aces had amassed a formidable 237 for five, a total that appeared commanding even on a batting-friendly surface.

Chasing a daunting target, Palamuru Strikers needed a dream start and they got exactly that.

Openers Vignesh Reddy and Chaitanya Reddy came out with aggressive intent and immediately put the Aces under pressure. The pair raced to 21 runs inside the first two overs before Vignesh exploded spectacularly in the third over.

The right-hander smashed 23 runs in a single over, instantly shifting the momentum and energising his team’s dugout.

From there, Vignesh simply went berserk.

He dismantled the bowling attack with fearless stroke-play, dispatching deliveries over the ropes with astonishing ease. Boundaries flowed freely as he reached his half-century in a mere 17 balls, sending a strong message that the chase was far from over.

At the end of the powerplay, Palamuru Strikers were cruising at 85 without loss and, remarkably, were ahead of the required rate.

Chaitanya Reddy quietly played the perfect supporting role, allowing Vignesh to dominate while ensuring the scoreboard never stalled.

The opening pair added a magnificent 119 runs and looked set to script an unforgettable chase.

However, cricket often turns on a single moment.

That breakthrough arrived in the ninth over when Vignesh attempted another big hit but holed out to Wafi Kachchhi off Ved Reddy’s bowling.

His dismissal proved to be the turning point of the contest.

The explosive opener departed after a stunning 86 from just 31 deliveries, an innings laced with eight boundaries and seven towering sixes.

The Strikers never quite recovered from that setback.

Captain Pragnay Reddy briefly threatened with a rapid 15 off seven balls, but Ved Reddy struck again to claim his second wicket and further dent the chase.

Soon afterwards, Chaitanya Reddy’s fighting innings of 35 from 28 balls came to an end when an excellent piece of fielding from Prateek Reddy resulted in a crucial run-out.

The pressure mounted steadily.

Afreedi Ahmed contributed 16 from 15 deliveries before he was caught by Vishal Yadav off Vidya Nanda’s bowling. Aces captain C.V. Milind then joined the party, producing a beautiful delivery to clean bowl Pratheek Pawar for three.

Despite a late flurry, Palamuru Strikers eventually ran out of time and overs, finishing at 217 for six.

The Khammam Aces, meanwhile, celebrated a memorable opening victory and etched their names into the history books by becoming the first-ever winners in Sreenidhi University TG20.

The match also served as a perfect advertisement for the tournament, delivering entertainment, big hitting and high-quality cricket in abundance.

If the opening encounter is any indication, the inaugural Sreenidhi University TG20 promises plenty more excitement in the days ahead.
