Monsoon set to arrive in Kerala soon, above-normal showers expected

Thiruvananthapuram: The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has announced that conditions are favorable for the onset of the monsoon over Kerala on Friday, with the state expected to receive 6% above-normal rainfall this season.

Very heavy rainfall is forecast for Kerala on Friday, with rain or thundershowers likely in most areas until June 2nd. The IMD has issued a yellow alert for 11 districts on Friday: Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Alappuzha, Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Idukki, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, and Kozhikode. These districts are expected to receive 64.5 mm to 115.5 mm of rainfall.

Conditions are also favorable for the further advance of the Southwest Monsoon into additional parts of the South Arabian Sea, Maldives, Comorin area, Lakshadweep, Kerala, Southwest and Central Bay of Bengal, Northeast Bay of Bengal, and Northeastern states within the next 24 hours.

Strong westerly and northwesterly winds at lower levels are expected to persist over Kerala until June 2nd, leading to heavy rainfall in isolated places. Thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds (30-40 km/h) are likely at one or two places until June 2nd.
