New Delhi: Former Commonwealth Games medallist Trupti Murgunde believes PV Sindhu’s run to the Japan Open final has come at the perfect time and could provide a much-needed boost to the two-time Olympic medallist ahead of the BWF World Championships.
The Worlds are scheduled to be held here from August 17 to 23.
Sindhu, who has endured an inconsistent spell over the past few seasons, has produced a string of impressive victories to reach the title clash in Tokyo, where she will face the reigning world champion, Japan’s Akane Yamaguchi.
As a player, it is very tough to consistently perform in every tournament with the expectations that come with it. This final will definitely give her a good feeling and confidence.
Akane might have a slight advantage playing at home, but the way Sindhu is looking on court, I do feel things can go our way. I have seen some of her training sessions recently, and she was looking wonderful.
The new format itself makes the game quicker. Every point becomes important, and players have to stay alert throughout, which naturally makes the game more aggressive.
As a spectator, I enjoy watching the craft, the skill, and the rallies. With the 15-point system, sometimes the game can finish very quickly. At the moment, it feels very short, but as we adjust to the 21-point system, players will eventually adapt.
We do have players who are technically very sound, but now it is a mix of both skill and aggression.”
