Guwahati: Asserting that the assembly election results were an affirmation of the BJP-led NDA’s commitment to work for peace and prosperity of the state, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday said his government will work to make Assam a Rs 10 lakh crore economy by 2028.
Speaking during the debate on the Motion of Thanks to the Governor’s Address in the assembly, Sarma said that tabling the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) Bill proved his government’s commitment to working for the rights of women belonging to the minority community.
“The NDA’s number of seats not just reached 102, but the number of votes polled by its candidates also increased by 15 lakh this time. The BJP candidates secured over 81.92 lakh votes, AGP got 14 lakh, and BPF got 8 lakh, with the NDA crossing the 1 crore votes mark in total,” he said.
According to the chief minister, BJP candidates secured more than 81.92 lakh votes, while the Asom Gana Parishad received around 14 lakh votes and the Bodoland People’s Front garnered nearly 8 lakh votes, taking the NDA’s combined tally beyond one crore votes.
Sarma said the NDA won all Scheduled Tribe-reserved constituencies and tea tribe-dominated seats, besides securing victory in all but one Scheduled Caste-reserved constituency.
The chief minister also claimed that voters had rejected what he described as attempts to politicise the death of Assamese singer Zubeen Garg and personal attacks made during the election campaign.
Referring to the introduction of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) Bill in the Assembly, Sarma said the government had fulfilled its commitment made before the elections.
“The tabling of the UCC Bill reflects our government’s commitment towards protecting the rights of women belonging to minority communities. I hope the opposition will support the legislation,” he said.
The chief minister also appreciated the decision of several Eidgah committees in the state to refrain from cow sacrifice during Bakri Eid.
Addressing concerns over rising prices raised by legislators during the discussion, Sarma said the government was aware of the issue and was taking steps to control inflation and provide relief to the public.
