Court extends BRS leader K Kavitha’s judicial custody till July 18

New Delhi: A court here on Friday extended till July 18 the judicial custody of BRS leader K Kavitha in a corruption case linked to the alleged Delhi excise policy scam.

Special Judge Kaveri Baweja passed the order.

The CBI had arrested Kavitha, the daughter of former Telangana chief minister K Chandrashekar Rao, in April from the Tihar Jail, where she was lodged after her arrest by the Enforcement Directorate (ED).

In its ruling, the court pointed to prima facie evidence suggesting that Kavitha played a central role in the criminal conspiracy and was involved in orchestrating kickbacks during the execution of the Delhi Excise Policy 2021-22.

“This court is of the opinion that K Kavitha was prima facie one of the main conspirators in the criminal conspiracy hatched in relation to the formulation and implementation of the Delhi Excise Policy 2021-22,” stated Justice Swarana Kanta Sharma.

The judge highlighted that the investigation is at a critical juncture, and therefore, no case for granting regular bail to Kavitha has been established at this time.

Kavitha’s plea for bail on the grounds of being the sole female accused in the case was also dismissed. The court highlighted that as an educated individual and former member of Parliament, Kavitha does not fit the profile of a vulnerable woman, and the severity of the allegations against her cannot be overlooked.
