Virender Sehwag believes India can win the 2027 men’s World Cup ‘very easily’ if the bowling attack can ‘stay strong’ for the tournament. The former cricketer put the responsibility of leading the pack on pacer Jasprit Bumrah, who’s being carefully managed with regular breaks, with just a year to go for the World Cup.
India’s bowling has been the biggest concern in this lead-up. The team conceded 295, 405, and 351 on flat tracks in the recent ODI series against West Indies, though it won two of those matches to clinch the series. Bumrah was rested for the entire series, and the backup group, including Gurnoor Brar, Prasidh Krishna and Mohammed Siraj, failed to inspire much confidence.
Pace would be the key in Africa at the World Cup, especially if the pitches are fresher at the start of the tournament. This is why India has groomed Brar for the role of the tall hit-the-deck quick, and why, reports claim, they are looking at veteran Bhubaneshwar Kumar to return to the fold.
Sehwag’s confidence, otherwise, is a reflection of how settled the batting order is, with almost the same personnel as the 2023 World Cup, but with more experience.
Sooryavanshi similar to me: Sehwag
Sehwag also spoke about Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, comparing the 15-year-old to his playing style.
“Sooryavanshi is in his prime, and his thinking is somewhat similar to mine, that of hitting right from the first ball. Now, it is about when he gets the opportunity and how many matches he plays for India,” Sehwag said.
Suryavanshi has warmed the bench in the first two T20Is against West Indies, with openers Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma showing good form to keep him at bay.
