Amstelveen: The complicated format of the FIH Hockey World Cup has left teams, fans and media grappling with permutations and combinations, with the focus increasingly shifting from performances on the field to calculations about who can reach the semifinals.

Instead of the traditional knockout format, where teams progress to the quarterfinals before the semifinals, the current system has brought the second round or crossover pool into play, with first-round results against the other teams in the second-round pool carrying forward and making the qualification race difficult to follow.

In fact, Teams and media are struggling with complex qualification math because head-to-head results and goal differences from Phase I carry directly into the second-stage crossover pools.

How the 2026 World Cup Format Works
  • Phase 1 (Pool Stage): 16 teams split into four pools of four (A, B, C, D) playing three matches each. Top two advance; bottom two head to classification. 
  • Phase 2 (Crossover Pools): Top teams merge into new groups (Pools E and F). Head-to-head points and goal records from matching Phase 1 opponents carry over. 
  • Phase 3 (No Quarterfinals): The top two finishers from Pools E and F go directly to the semi-finals, leaving zero margin for error or traditional knockout-stage “resets”
Why Teams and Media Are Grappling with the Equations
1. The “Carried-Over” Result Trap
Teams do not start with a clean slate in Phase 2. If Team A and Team B advance from Pool A into Pool E, the exact result, points, and goal difference from their Phase 1 match against each other are automatically carried forward into Phase 2. Teams play only two additional matches in Phase 2 against the qualifiers from the opposite group. 
2. A Single Early Slip-Up is Compounded
If a heavyweight team loses an early Phase 1 match to their group’s runner-up, they enter the Phase 2 Crossover Pool already trailing by 3 points. Because there are no quarterfinals to reset the bracket, that single early-stage loss frequently acts as a mathematical bottleneck. [1, 2]
3. Media Center Math Fatigue
Journalists and analysts are finding that on-field tactical breakdowns are being overshadowed by complex permutations. In the press box, media members are spending considerable time tracking multi-team goal-difference scenarios, multi-layered tiebreakers, and parallel group outcomes just to calculate who can mathematically survive.
