The Great HCA Election Circus

By Vinay Rao

Every few years, Hyderabad cricket produces a spectacle that rivals anything seen on the field — the HCA elections.

The current season promises to be one of the most entertaining yet.

It began with a sudden enthusiasm to conduct elections. Normally, such an important exercise would involve careful thought and a serious reading of the byelaws.

Instead, the decision appeared to arrive with the same spontaneity as the recent move to shift Under-23 selections to the junior selectors — a decision that left many in Hyderabad cricket wondering how exactly that conclusion was reached.

Apparently someone pointed to a clause in the byelaws. That was enough.

As the saying goes: “Mazaak mazaak mein ye kya ho gaya?”

The Electoral Officer

This Electoral Officer’s presence at the stadium has almost become a tradition during election season. Having been around for multiple elections, he appears quite comfortable in the role.

Some say he enjoys the greenery at the stadium. Others say he simply enjoys election season.

Whether the byelaws are equally comfortable with the process is another question altogether.

The President

The President’s office has turned into a fascinating communication department.

Every few days a new letter appears. Soon after, another clarification follows. Then comes a press conference explaining the previous letter — occasionally followed by yet another clarification.

Members are now trying to track which version is the official one.

Having famously lost his election by just one vote, the President now seems determined to ensure that at least letters and press conferences never suffer from such narrow margins. There are plenty of those.

At times, it feels as though the President is reading scripts prepared elsewhere — and the scripts keep changing.

Meanwhile, the byelaws sit quietly on the shelf, still waiting to be consulted.

The Vice President

For a brief moment, circumstances had elevated the Vice President to the role of Acting President.

It looked like the beginning of an important innings. Unfortunately, the innings seem to have ended before it really began.

The real tragedy, some say, is that the freshly printed “Acting President” visiting cards may now go to waste.

One only hopes that at least during an IPL match introduction, someone remembers to acknowledge the title — if not for anything else, at least for the sake of those visiting cards.

The Joint Secretary

The Joint Secretary has developed a particularly keen interest in certain areas of Hyderabad cricket.

His attention towards the women’s side of the game is especially noticeable. With Women’s Day around the corner, that enthusiasm appears even more visible.

He is also known for his deep interest in the byelaws — particularly when discussing conflict of interest and institutional teams.

Members often joke that the HCA byelaws function much like IPL playing conditions: everyone quotes them when convenient and interprets them creatively when necessary.

The Nomination Drama

But the real drama lies in the nominations.

One influential camp is facing an unusual problem — too many loyalists. Several supporters have enthusiastically filed nominations, and persuading them to withdraw is proving harder than expected. Loyalty, it seems, often comes with ambition attached.

In another camp, a candidate has been introduced whom many insiders believe may struggle in a direct contest. The strategy now appears to involve persuading another loyalist to step aside and make way.

The complication is that the loyalist being asked to withdraw has spent considerable time and effort organising tournaments and activities for the very camp now requesting the sacrifice. Gratitude, it seems, has a short memory in election season.

Meanwhile, another powerful lobby is attempting a different strategy — quietly working to engineer a “consensus” so that certain posts become unanimous.

There is also the small complication that one of their candidates may face eligibility questions. But in HCA elections, such details rarely disturb a good strategy meeting.

The Secretaries’ Season

For club secretaries, this is the golden season.

For most of the year they remain quietly in the background. But during election time they suddenly become the most important people in Hyderabad cricket.

Phones ring constantly. Invitations arrive. Meetings multiply.

It is the one time when everyone remembers that the secretaries exist — and that they vote.

The Late-Night Politics

The real decisions rarely happen in official meetings.

They happen over dinners, breakfasts and late-night discussions where political arithmetic changes by the hour.

Rumours travel quickly. Intermediaries become important. Strategies are revised daily.

The Possible Twist

And then there is the one unpredictable factor — the court.

If the judiciary decides to intervene and pause the process, all the planning, lobbying and late-night calculations could suddenly come to a halt.

Which is why, behind all the noise and negotiations, there is also a certain nervous anticipation.

Curtain Call

Until then, the HCA election circus continues.

Rumours flourish. Camps negotiate. Loyalists calculate. Brokers whisper.

And Hyderabad cricket once again proves an old truth:

The matches may be played on the field — but the real entertainment in HCA often happens outside it.
