Bihar govt recommends CBI probe into death of NEET aspirant in Patna

Patna: The Bihar government recommended a CBI probe into the recent death of a female NEET aspirant in Patna, Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary said on Saturday.

A Special Investigation Team (SIT) of the Bihar police is investigating the case.

The deceased, hailing from Jehanabad, was found unconscious in her hostel room in Patna’s Chitragupt Nagar earlier this month. She died at a private hospital on January 11 after remaining in a coma for several days. Her family had alleged that she was sexually assaulted, accusing authorities of attempting a cover-up.

On Friday, female students of Patna University took out a protest march demanding justice for the victim. The ‘Beti Bachao Nyay March’ was taken out from Magadh Mahila College to Kargil Chowk, where students staged a demonstration and demanded a CBI inquiry into the case.

Earlier in the day, the victim’s family met Bihar DGP Vinay Kumar and alleged that police officials were pressuring them to accept the death as a case of suicide and deny allegations of rape.

The family said they had lost confidence in the state police and demanded a CBI probe. A public interest litigation was also filed in the Patna High Court seeking a court-monitored investigation.

The victim’s mother alleged that the police were attempting to suppress the case and claimed that bribes had been accepted by those involved.

The victim’s brother said officials from the Special Investigation Team (SIT) asked the family to accept that the student died by suicide.
