Saswad Kalabhairava Temple

Kalabhairava Temple, also known as Bhairavnath Temple, is located in Saswad, near Pune, Maharashtra. It is situated close to the Karha River and surrounded by historical palaces, making it a place of spiritual and cultural importance. The temple is dedicated to Lord Kalabhairava, a fierce manifestation of Lord Shiva, who is regarded as the time’s protector and the land’s guardian deity.

The Kalabhairava Temple dates back several centuries and has been a place of worship for devotees of Lord Shiva. According to legend, Lord Shiva entrusted Kalabhairava with safeguarding Saswad and its surroundings. Over the years, it has witnessed various historical events, as Saswad was once an important seat of power during the Peshwa era. The temple has been preserved and remains a significant spiritual center in the region.

The temple features traditional Indian architecture with a garbhagriha (sanctum sanctorum) and sabhamandapa (assembly hall). The sanctum houses the idols of Kalabhairava, Jogeshwari, and Bhairava. The temple’s unique design includes a dome-shaped roof and an open-pillared assembly hall inspired by Islamic architectural influences. Three entrances lead into the temple, each beautifully adorned with carvings of Lord Ganesha. Two deepmalas (lamp pillars) stand in front of the temple, which are lit during festivals, creating a divine atmosphere.

A significant event in the temple’s history is linked to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. During the Battle of Khalad Belsar, Shivaji Maharaj’s horse was bitten by a snake. Seeking divine guidance, he turned to Bhairavanatha, who was worshipped in a small shrine at Girme Ali, Saswad. Even today, a sacred image of Bhairavanatha in the form of Tandala can be found there.

In gratitude for divine intervention, Shivaji Maharaj vowed to build a grand temple for Bhairavanatha. He later fulfilled this promise by constructing the present Kalabhairava Temple.

Later, Ahilya Devi Holkar, the great ruler of Malwa, contributed to the temple’s expansion. She built platformed apartments and a fencing wall around the temple, enhancing its structure and protecting the sacred site.

Devotees believe that Kalabhairava protects his worshippers from evil forces, misfortunes, and negative energies. Many come here to seek his blessings for courage, protection, and success.

Even today, devotees perform special abhishekams, prayers, and offerings to Lord Kalabhairava, especially on Kalabhairava Jayanti and Maha Shivaratri, when the temple is filled with divine energy and celebration.
